New website tells you when to buy cheap petrol

petrol-420x0The consumer watchdog has launched a new website that tracks the petrol price cycle in the major capitals and gives tips on when to buy your fuel.

A daily report will be published at this link:

https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/petrol-diesel-and-lpg/petrol-price-cycles#petrol-price-cycles-in-capital-cities

It’s the first time the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has offered advice like this.

Along with other websites and apps that give maps and graphs of petrol prices – such as Motormouth and the Australian Institute of Petroleum - this new site will add to the growing mine of information available to motorists who are determined to save on their fuel bills.

Also, don’t forget our recent story “5 Ways to Save on Petrol“.

Unfortunately there is no price cycle outside the capital cities, so the ACCC tool doesn’t cover regional areas.

If you’re in regional NSW, you might want to join the Prime7 News Petrol Patrol Facebook page, where members post pictures of petrol price boards from around regional NSW to share information on where the cheap fuel is.

Below are the ACCC’s tips for Sydney, Melbourne and brisbane today, and a graph of the price cycle in each city.

Sydney tip:

  • prices are decreasing but they are likely to decrease further
  • if possible, motorists should delay buying petrol until later.

Melbourne tip:

  • prices appear to be around the lowest point of the price cycle
  • now is a good time for motorists to buy petrol.

Brisbane tip:

  • prices are decreasing but they are likely to decrease further
  • if possible, motorists should delay buying petrol until later.

The oil companies did not pass on the reduction in petrol prices until several weeks after the Huge fall in the price of oil, citing the carriers on the way to Australia and the existing stock in the service station had paid the higher price. Until that stock had been exhausted and the re supply from the lower fuel price would then be passed on to the public. Surprise, surprise, the first sign of the rise in Brent crude, the next day rose from $1:00 area back up to $1:30's. Where is the consumer watch dog when the consumers are gouged when the price rises, on the previous cheaper fuels have already landed in Australia. Allan / Queanbeyan

Ted from Linton. This price information is all well and good but seeing i live out from Ballarat we are paying at least 20 cents a liter moor than city drivers. Would it not better if the watch dog put pressure on oil companies to bring rural prices into line with city drivers. The old saying transport costs should not come into it any more as some rural servos are closer to depots than some metro servos selling at city prices

David from NSW Why does the NSW government do the same as WA over there the have such a thing as Fuel Watch this tells day by day the cheapest suburbs to buy your fuel. All you have to do is download the program enter your post code and it tells you the cheapest fuel with in that area, with the name and address of the petrol station. If it can be done in WA every state can therefore do it. Why do we not push for it to be done here!

Yes totally useless. Just look at those figures ... they're all over the place. Look, there is NO cycle. The price does not rise in a 'cycle' ... it JUMPS! Then in 'cycles' down before JUMPING to a high again. And there is no consistency. Except for when the damn TV stations say "the cycle is on the way down so hold off for a few days" THEN it jumps up just to spite them! Wish they'd stop that. It's purely a guessing game now ... the prize being 'Pick the Lowest Point and WIN!' Really, why doesn't the government just regulate it. But then, what fun would that be!

After a quick review, the information is of no use, you as a motorist has to guess the low point, am I missing something, I could not see a future prediction, only past results which the low periods were varied. I tried motormouth and found the app was hopeless as it locked onto 1 site and could not tell me prices in other suburbs from where I was in. Am I missing something...? I spoke to other people who also were not impressed at all with motormouth and have deleted that app. If people could enlighten me on how this ACCC is supposed to help motorists, I would gladly appreciate it. Thanks JA
