Open letter to the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull

Dear Malcolm,

As a sixty year-old who is now our prime minister may I congratulate you, at least on behalf of some of our 130,000 members, on your sudden elevation and commend the benefits of joining the FiftyUp Club.

The snap poll alongside this letter on the website may give you some idea as to your current popularity amongst the members who have previously told they are predominantly coalition supporters.

We’re in the midst of the Fair Go For Fifty Ups campaign which seeks to highlight the cost of living issues, pressures and even solutions facing one in five Australians.

Given we are a powerful electoral force and issues such as retirement incomes, tax and GST, health spending and insurance are the bread and butter of politics I thought you might be interested in some interim findings.

It’s our intention to bundle up the 16,000 responses so far, which include some robust statistics and pithy comments, and present them to politicians in Canberra next month. Perhaps you’ll be free?

When it comes to state politicians in particular eyeing off an increasing the GST we are clearly split down the middle.

While 46% say absolutely no change to the system another 46% do support increases to the 10% rate and/or to the base of goods and services on which it is levied.

Another contentious issue under increasing debate is whether the family home should be included in the pension assets test.

When asked what policy was most important to their family situation 42% nominated the family home exemption followed by 15% choosing no changes to superannuation taxes.

Given your predecessor promised there’d be no changes to super in his administration many of us might be forgiven for wondering if this remains the case.

Finally with health lobby groups calling for a review of private health insurance, and the government reportedly due to call one soon, we’d love to know where you stand.

When you were last in charge of the party in 2009 you may recall using your budget reply speech to reject Labor’s means testing of this insurance.

The scrapping of the means test remains seemingly unaffordable but it would be popular with the 51% of our respondents finding it hard to afford but ‘not prepared to go without it’.

Another 16% have had to cancel their cover because it has become a ‘luxury’.

Please consider the above and we shall forward the final poll results as soon as they are in,

 Yours Sincerely,

Christopher Zinn

as i am heading towards retirement and planning to spend some extended time overseas to make my retirement dollar go further.. a few close retired friends have been hit with a new rule which makes them come back and live in Australia for 2 years (dont know full details) to qualify to live overseas!!!! they had no notification or warning about this rule. even though they had visited centrelink regularly and asked if travelling overseas would affect their pension. They/We have paid a lot of tax over our working life so fair go!!! does anbody know of anbody in similar circumstances and if they where sucessfull in reversing this decision and how...

Murray, don't know about success but I researched this some yrs ago for a friend & googled 'receiving an Oz pension & living overseas in retirement', can't remember all details now (except it is fraught with difficulty) but there were lots of threads/links/conversations to learn people's experiences re that. You'd think they'd be happy to have a few less demands on ambulances, hosps etc at home wouldn't you?

thanks for the reply Lyn... you pay tax all your life and you decide to enjoy life and the government wants us to live in poverty here in OZ. When we can live overseas on our pension reasonably comfortably. My friend even inquired about living overseas and was told there would be no problems... suprise suprise somebody (no name given) in the bowels of the public service decided to refuse the pension to my friend... he is coming back to Oz this week to try and sought it out.. Any suggestions from any person...

Although I understand the need for refugees to have some support with initial costs, once established, (in a town of our selection, not theirs), they should not receive more than our pensioners do. It is a disgrace for tax paying senior citizens to struggle while people who have contributed nothing to our country get a better deal. There should also be a time limit on benefits and I support drug testing for benefits recipients. I think people who trash public housing should not be given another house at taxpayers expense. I support small cabins for the homeless such as in some overseas cities. These appear to be having great results with reducing unemployment, hospitalisation visits, crime, drug abuse and rapes. The reduced community cost in these things would more than pay for the cabins. I am sure you understand that to truly make the country prosper the government needs to invest in apprenticeships and incentives for small business to hire more staff and reduce the costs, red tape and taxes for small businesses. Stamp duty on properties should be removed for the family home and only applied to a second or subsequent property ownership and doubled or tripled for non Australian purchasers. This pressure from overseas buyers is making it completely unaffordable for our kids and young families to afford a basic family home, especially in Sydney. We need greater support for our Farmers and much clearer markings on overseas products, especially those that are produced here. All ideals, politics and idealism aside, our country needs firm business and productivity management, without extending our debt, and like any smart business does, throwing most of the expenditure towards jobs and productivity that will grow the country rather than at expenses with no return. We need to promote the theme of, "What can I, (the average citizen), do to improve Australia?, " rather than the '"I will get whatever I can from the Taxpayer," that seems to pervade society these days.

DON'T BRING BACK THE SO CALLED CARBON TAX The Government treats the so called refugees better than the Australian population that built this great country , and they get away with breaking the law because it would be considered raceisim. Come on, fair go for Australians.

Do you really believe Malcolm cares what we think? Malcolm is about Malcolm and what he wants , he is an atheist who wants to get the rewards without the hard yards. Mr Abbot was not perfect by any means but he worked to make Australia a better place for our children after the open slather spending of Ms Gillard and Mr Rudd. I place no trust in Mr Turnbull at all so see no point in asking him to consider the financial problems of the over 50's as he too distant from this group of Australians.

Angela from NSW I welcome the decision made by the Cabinet and look forward to a Prime Minister who is articulate, quick thinking, decisive and has the ability to not only, communicate a position effectively, but to instill confidence in general. Please God,he will not need to repeat every opening statement! What does not cease to amaze me, is the fact that so many Australians fail to recognize that the leader of the Party is indeed chosen by the party, in a democratic vote by Cabinet. In any election, state or federal, we vote for the Local member of our chosen party, not for the leader of party! I would like to congratulate Malcome Turnbull, and give him a go. I hope he takes our Fifty Ups concerns on board as they represent a large number voters! I too hope, this heralds a long awaited and much needed period of stability for Australia.

If someone says that once more about us not electing the Prime Minister I will scream. We are not fools we know we vote in our local member but we also know at the time WHO IS LEADER OF THAT PARTY.

Steady on chaps, no need for name - calling and bad language, it will scare others from commenting on their serious concerns. I know this is called the Angry corner but maybe there should be a naughty corner too! For us to be taken seriously by Govt. we need to be seen to be mature (as we are).

Please Mr Prime Minister, please look at the plight of us pensioners who are trying to exist below the poverty line. Have to now cross grocery items off every fortnight & have had to cancel contents insurance to pay funeral insurance. Being chronically ill have to pay carers and so many extras needed to manage my condition. This fortnight have $1.25 left after bills and have to rely on St. Vincent de Paul to help with some food

Someone
Someone from QLD commented:

Hopefully, you will stop the sale of our country to foreigners and start to look after our farmers. Stop the banks from doing these dodgy dealings and back our farmers to the hilt. Also need to look after our own homeless people and the needy. No more foreign workers until all our own people are employed. No more refugees should be taken in either, until these challenges have been sorted. You could also sort out the drain on the public purse by politicians. We pay them enough without them also getting all the lurks and perks, and once they're out of office they should live off their own means. If you fixed this, you'd have the support of most Aussies. On another subject, how is it that all everyone seems to be worried about is gay marriage. Surely there are so many more important things on the agenda. I must say though that men marrying women, men marrying men and women marrying women seems to me to be a recipe for some majorly messed up children down the track. Heaven knows the human race is already stuffed up enough. Oh, that's right, it will put votes up for whoever puts the law into place. Good luck and please remember to take our opinions (if only) on board. I think the general populous has more sense than most of those elected.

It is great to see the age of entitlement is over with the Ex PM only getting a measly $307542.00 per year, come on Mr Hockey give him something he could survive on like the normal age pension.
