The Great Aussie Health Check

The symptoms include prolonged pains in the hip area,  pronounced  feelings of helplessness and a fear of surprises especially from doctors’ bills.

The diagnosis is of a private health insurance system with policies that increase in price by some 6% a year and where too many patients pay more than they might.

The medicine includes matching yourself to a better insurer  and a better plan more closely aligned with your needs to save money, restore sanity and regain control.

Your treatment options include speaking to your current  provider, seeking out a new one perhaps via a comparison site or joining the Great Aussie Health Check.

The more adventurous might be prescribed to try all three options and over the next four weeks take the steps to ensure they are getting more value from their health insurance.

So far nearly 30,000 FiftyUp members have joined our latest campaign to use their negotiating power to secure better offers in this confusing and complex market.

Part of the issue for the over 50s is their loyalty to existing insurers. It may be justified and due to satisfaction because 69% report they have stayed put with their fund for six plus years.

Only two per cent  in our recent survey thought their cover represented  ‘good value’!

It may be there’s a lack of appreciation of other offers out there, perhaps from new competitive funds, which could deliver similar cover at a lower cost.

Anyone can reduce their insurance bill by excluding certain treatments or agreeing to pay higher excesses (ie the amount you pay before the insurer kicks in) but this can be risky.

The irony is, and this has been reported in comments from those who’ve already joined the campaign, is FiftyUps have found they are paying for certain services, such as obstetrics, they are unlikely to need.

Likewise as you are getting on it’s a good idea to ensure vulnerable areas such as your heart and joints are also included in the private hospital cover.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing some tips and information , such as how to understand out of pocket and gap payments better, to help you get the most out of your insurance.

In the meantime check out the Great Aussie Health Check campaign. There’s no cost or obligation and it might prompt you to give you insurance a real work out. Good luck.

I was going to opt out of health insurance recently. But then I broke a tooth and a crown is going to cost over $1500.00. My fund CUA is paying $1100.00. I think I'm going to stay in the health fund a little longer.

I have been with Medibank private all my Life. I'm now 56 when I did shop Around last year I approached my fund And they offers me a Corporate rate to Remain which was equivalent to the discount offered with others Try it worked For me

I have changed my Health Insurance twice in the past year after being with Medibank since its inception. I felt leaving Medibank was unloyal, but couldn't keep up with their premiums. I have since changed to NIB, but because they didn't combine Osteo and Physio treatments which ended costing me more, I changed again. Neither NIB nor Medibank were 'happy' nor wanted to help by reducing my premium after 30 or so years of loyalty and called me when I had changed and asked why, DUH!!! So I have done my research and am now with Latrobe for hospital cover (which covers EVERYTHING) and Australian Unity for extras as they cover Osteo and Physio together, and paying just over $300/month. I don't know what I shall do when premiums rise again!!!!

I'm 58 and work part time. As my body dictates my ability to continue working. Imore and more I use extra services like chiro, physio and remedial massage to keep me going but the annual level of cover with my health fund barely covers my outlay and often runs out less than half way through the year. We pay top $ for our premiums plus the outlay for each service. It makes me wonder if we're better off without the extra cover and just pay the service fee outright each time? Anyone else think this too?

I am 69 and a Medibank private member, I need coverage specific for my age. As a pensioner I am finding it more and more difficult to pay the premiums. I need coverage that is suitable for my age and requirements. Beverley NSW

Living on a monthly wage, we can't afford health insurance. It's just so expensive. Although I would like too.

I think Private Health Insurers should have a cover for Seniors that meets their requirements. Lorna Bebbington

I have had private health care all of my adult life. My next birthday will see me turning 60. I have been very lucky to enjoy excellent health and only been hospitalised 3 times in my (twice to give birth and to have my tonsils out at the age of 5). My question is where is the rebate for staying loyal to BUPA and rarely using their services? I do use the dentist and optometrist annually but there has never been any great pay out by my medical fund for me. I use alternate medicine generally and for that I must pay full price. I feel that I am prejudiced against because I look after myself by doing exercise and watching my diet. Is there anywhere that will reward the members who use less of the services? I would be happy if the dental gap fee disappeared.
