Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I would like to see the club obtain from businesses, local Government and Councils a certain recognition, and consideration and not been forgotten but heard. Besides the great discounts, I would like to see the fiftyupclub club make noise to the local Government and Councils regarding care and services for our seniors, to be noticed ,heard and respected and not rejected.

Tried to join after ACA last night, but the site was down. Probably bombarded. Now registered and came looking for the "offers". The only one I have found was the Coles Insurance. Then found Les' comment below. Lets hope FiftyUp does take off. .

I just noticed from an ad on the radio that FiftyUp aka One Big Switch receives a commission for every policy sold. Mmmmm starting to prove my scepticism but I hope not. Its an excellent Idea Mr FiftyUp but please lets not con the people into believing they are getting some special deal, just let is see some real action

Hi Les, yes we do earn a commission for every policy switched, this is how we fund our campaigns and are able to pursue future deals. Without any revenue the FiftyUp Club would not be able to have ever been started nor continue to run.

Call me a sceptic if you want but since I joined very early in the piece, just a couple of days after it was launched in fact, I've not seen any real attempt to show us what this club is going to do. Now this morning just reading back some pages and posts, FiftyUp need to listen to their members, I mean really listen to what they are saying. Cheaper prices FiftyUp, not some bogy deal with Coles Insurance. FiftyUp, I don't want top pay an excessive price to Coles for insurance, I don't want to buy my petrol from Coles, I don't want to get my medicine and glasses from them as is proposed. I want food items and cheap. Get Coles to give us a discount card, a FiftyUp special card so at checkout time we get real value from the club where ever we shop. We need discounts across the board on every day items Mr FiftyUp and fast, show some real strength, you have the numbers now, so show all of us just how well you can perform your job of representing those that qualify to become a member

Just a comment about insurance. I opened ny mail yesterday to find my home and contents insurance would not be renewed by Youi for next year. This is based on my postal code and the fact that in January of 2013 there was flooding and a tornado that crossed the coast in my area. So much for the TV ads that originally encouraged me to go with Youi to save a couple of hundred dollars on my policy. Not a happy consumer!!!!
