Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Hooray for the 50 up club. We have lived through recession, through pilot strikes, through feast and famine and have learnt soooo very much from our experiences. Why then is it so difficult for 50 up people to get a job let alone the respect deserved in the workplace. Our hands on experience and knowledge should be gainfully employed to guide those who are lost for direction on how to better manage retail services, how to improve the bottom line, how to make do with little to get a lot and so on. Yet we are an invisible generation with great wisdom, knowledge and experience to share. Give us a better change and watch us shine so that the younger generations can ultimately be the stars of the future.

Hi There, I am with you in principle, but we need to recognise the public finances are like a bucket. Too many holes within and we have a problem with liquidity (just ask K Rudd for recent examples!!). Too few holes and we have a problem with distributions/allocations. Getting the "Goldilocks Just Right" mix is the goal but seldom achieved. Pls refer to my earlier post today [26 November 2013 at 3:19PM] - we don't want a PIGS economy to bestow upon our offspring although we all generally believe (without exception) we walk on water based upon our life skills and financial skills evident. We cant have it both ways - I think some pragmatics is needed here as not all deserve a life of leisure in retirement if they have squandered their savings over time. In my humble opinion (IMHO)

The solo factor for travelling is there because it costs just as much to clean and make up a room for 1 person as it does for 2 - take a friend with you, unless you are prepared to share with a stranger

Why is the offer only for NSW - we live in the ACT - what is the difference in risk

Hi Anne, that's just the nature of this offer. You could give Coles insurance a call on 1300 661 436 to see if they can offer you something beneficial. I'm sure there will be an offer in the future that benefits you!

I love the concept of reducing the age for accessing the age pension, but how does the tax paying system pay for this when 1) we are living longer, 2) our needs and expenditures are increasing over time, 3) our medical costs are spiraling exponentially as we avoid inevitable age based conditions and 4) who is going to fund all of the above "entitlements and age based pensions" regardless of how well we have managed our finances during our lifetimes?? Do we want to become the next Greece, Italy Portugal or Spain (PIGS) nations where national Debt exceeds national incomes because we have more takers than givers?? Is this the type of economics we want to pass on to our Children and Grand Children? Wake up Australia!!

The quote I got for car insurance was considerably less that my current policy, but how much will it increase in the 2nd year?

I've been with them for 12 months. Mine went up by $11 in that time. I also had a "not at fault" accident during this time & had my claim processed without a single hassle.

Is it only car insurance?

Phil
Phil from NSW replied to Lillian:

No Lillian, it is meant to be for a range of goods & services. They will email you as offers are negotiated.

Must say I'm a little sceptical, ("there's no such thing as a free lunch") however I'd like to see across the board discounts on most things already mentioned.

Grace from NSW commented:

I just went into the Coles Car insurance & guess what? their insurance for my car is over $250 more than I am already paying. That also included my 15% flybuys discount. So where is the big discount that over 50's are supposed to get.

Hi Grace, ensure you go through FiftyUpClub.com. Once through you should be notified that Coles will chat to you. You should still be eligible for the $100 price beat guarantee. You can contact Coles on 1300 661 436.
