Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I have joined to have a voice, be seen and be valued. we have worked so hard throughout our life and the government and in general store owners etc do not seen any value in us. We only spend money when we have it. No credit required. I believe we should lobby the government and make a deal with them to get discounts on services the same as a pensioner. we have worked for it, we should be congratulated and appreciated not kicked in the bum and penalised. I wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to signing up to good deals. Robyn from Ballina

That like many others of my age bracket, wether working or not that some of the major suppliers seem fit to assist people that fit into the age bracket. As a large majority of these people are currently supporting a large amount of the younger generation, in particular their own children. Some type of fringe benefit would be greatly appreciated.

I hope the club can secure discounts and products/services designed for our age group to ease the financial stress that people in the 50+ age group are under. We should be setting ourselves up for an easy transition to retirement but with the costs of life's necessities increasing it is getting harder and harder. Future retirees like us (50+) will be expected to self fund our retirement and from what I've seen on News programs the Government want to get there hands on part of the equity we have in our homes, we have worked our best years to set ourselves up only to be threatened with later retirement and a loss of equity tied up in our homes. When will we ever win!

Yes, I have joined and read the full report, hoping I will be able to get a reduction on power and insurances. One Big Switch was of no help as the service is not in my area code of 4760. If the FiftyUp Club is to help all it has to be in all areas. I am very sceptical.
