Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I would like to see a card that enables fiftyup club members to receive discounts on products through different sponsors, as were the tail end of the baby boomers we've gone through our working life supporting ourself without the help of Government...... Now we need help, and I do hope more over fifties sign up and we to can get product discounts as well!

I hope that this will make companies offer much better services and particularly customer service targeted towards the needs of the mature people of Australia. There is a great buying power in a club like this and it would be to the detriment of any company that did not recognise this group. Having surveys on what people want is a great way to target the specific companies for an improved service. Hopefully there will be more offers on this website soon.

We may be forgotten by business because of our sometimes misguided loyalty but the government certainly knows about us with the current push to increase pension age and threats to superannuation. Fifty Up club could also provide an excellent forum to fight to maintain the nest egg that we have worked a lifetime to gain and allows us to be less of a burden on the public purse.

YES! I have been medically retired for awhile now and on super. But whilst I am self-funded and thus not taking any pensions, do you think the government will give me discounts on anything? Not even when I hit the 'proper' retirement age....if I ever get there, with the proposal to raise it looming.

It would give people who have been supporting businesses most of there lives, the rewards they deserve, and not before time. Please bring it to Qld. I am a pensioner after 50 years of hard work have had to reduce my insurance policies to a minimum. I also have been forced to give up private health care insurance at a time when I need it most.
