Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Cost of living generally is a problem for all of us ie; I'm 70 have been insured (Home and Vehicle) with a company that is supposed to look after the over 50,s for a number of years, shopped around and saved over $400 per annum on vehicle and a similar amount on House and contents insurance with another company ( Budget Direct) for the same cover, it pays to research.

I liked the upcoming focus on Age discrimination. I had to start my own IT business as I could not even get contract employment once I hit my late 40's (now 61). The joke about how you do not have to give your age is so lame; IE If you did (as I did) year 12 in 1969, and are required to prove your EDU quals, bit hard to avoid (indirectly) giving your age???

Just saw Fiftyup email about the Discrimination Commissioner talk on 2GB - please post the recording on the website later so we can hear it. Age Discrimination in employment is a real problem especially in recruitment over 50s are actively disregarded regardless of our skills and experience. In the field of Human Resources - over 80% of HR Managers are Female in their 30s. There is an assumption that an older male is an unacceptable choice regardless of the wealth of skill and experience we could provided a company far beyond the pay grade and beyond the comparison with younger applicants but our applications never make it through the first cull. CEOs and recruiters actively set age, and gender parameters in building a job profile. Discrimination laws should apply to these practices against potential employees - don't to have a cumbersome system but equal opportunity to apply and be measured on your merits not your age or gender.

Peter: I agree with you, but I would like more than just a little bit, this is the reason I also joined The Seniors Party(seniorsparty.org). They are looking at getting representation in Canberra to fight on our behalf. It's about time we get our own party!

My sister and I are both in our 70's and have been ignored by shop staff, on many occasions, when we have been needing help with purchases.

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Pamela:

Pamela, I have also been ignored, but I let them have the length of my tongue (nicely though). I found a Party: The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that is looking at get represented in Canberra solely to assist us. Don't you think it's about time we get properly heard? I think so!

after 15 years working for a national company and 8 years as team leader, leading hand I retired early.. after a few years I heard they were employing again...so I applied for a position with the same company at a lower grading to do the same job as before, but was told I did not have enough experience...so work that one out and my age at the time was ...a young 65

Well I am almost 61 and looking for work Caravan Park manager or assistant manager I have the qualifications and experience but do you think I can get a job , I guess I am TO OLD unfortunately some of us at this age have not got very much super to draw on and need to work to stay alive. Just needed to get this off my chest. May be some sort of seniors job web site would be good or encourage business to employ knowledgeable older people, we are worth it and we can make a difference.

Henry from NSW replied to Barry:

Barry: Not without a fight first! I found a Party: The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that is looking at being represented in Canberra to fight for us, nobody else, just us! So with this club in one hand and the Seniors Party on the other one I think we can get somewhere. Don't let go, we have to let them hear us, we deserve this much!
