Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I would be happy to have discounted prescriptions. They are just so expensive.

If you live in Sydney you can get great discounted prices at Chemist Wharehouse. Maybe if you have someone who lives here who you could send it too and get it filled for you. When my elderly parents come from the country to visit they get theirs filled here so they save a little

Annette: I also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to have representation in Canberra where laws are made. Over 50's are not represented anywhere. This Club will do that, but with the combination of a Party in Canberra it could be a mighty force. What are your thoughts here?

Better deals for Energy and Health Insurance costs. I've been with the one Health Insurance Company since I started work at 15, now 49 years later they wouldn't even know let alone recognise the relatively healthy lifestyle I've lead with a discount.

I agree with Shane. Health Insurance for those who make little or no claims should be lower. Also Energy costs are an increasing problem.

Patricia: When joining this Club my hopes are to get better prices in quite a number of areas. I also joined The Seniors Party(www.seniorsparty.org) in the belief that having representation in Canberra could be a very big assistance too. What do you think?

Con: they don't give a rats.. anymore: you could be with the same bank for 30 years, but because you are now not as young as when you started with them they see you more as a liability than a asset. I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniiorsparty.org) because they do care and want to assist you. It's in its early stages, but what a great thing to do: to join them at their earlier times to follow their progress. Have a look at it and tell what do you think about it (if you wish, of course)
