Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I asked AGL why there was no pensioner concession and was told that they used to give this but - sorry no more. When told about the FiftyUp Club and the numbers joining this Club she agreed they would probably have to reconsider this attitude. This lovely girl asked me for the website so her parents could join.

Acting as a group, here tis: Signal our intention not to buy fuel at specified outlets unless a 50up discount on top of recognised discounts is given .Works for me. This action can be transferred to, and applied to many other services, retail and financial institutions.

Ray from NSW I hope this concept stirs the commercial world into some concrete action with regard to Seniors. My section of the market is more or less ancored, financaily, two generations ago . The economy increases faster the budget of older retirees can cope with.

Hope to continue finding savings, especially health costs. Already found some savings by moving to Coles Insurance, and slightly improved utilities by going to Origin Energy

Darrell
Darrell from NSW replied to kevin:

Don't bother, I'm with Origin and my last bill was $1408.33...!!! And that's just for three months for a 4 bedroom, brick veneer home. When I rang them and asked why so much, I was told basically that if you want a discount, lock yourself into a contract with us for two years, otherwise we can't help you. Great customer service Origin. I'm going Solar...

As a 78 y.o. retired age pensioner I'm in wide agreement with the many good comments & suggestions already made by others. Keeping up with cost-of-living increases is a concern while maintaining the focus on 'healthy living' ........without knowing what remains of life's journey. Go the Grey Army!!

Paul! Well said, let's rally the troops and get more people to join so we've got more people power to work with! Thanks for your feedback!
