Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Give us more honest buying power. Get loyalty discounts because you have been with a company for years; usually the ads give new members a discount. Use local produce where possible, doesn't have the hidden cost of travel to get the item to you. Grow your own. Much nicer

I feel we are invisible - we are the ones with the "so called" big disposable income yet noting is marketed to our age group. We pay our bills on time - yet we don't get recognised. Car rego, energy bills, phone, internet should have some incentive for us to sign up.

Are you sure you weren't looking for the gold lining in the tomatoes. I'm off the the local Farmers Market on the weekend. Tired of buy fruit and veg and either going mouldy or shrivelling after a couple of days. They take us for fools if they don't realise that we know most of the product is in cold stoage for awhile. Like Coles brand milk. They haven't taken the permiate out of it so I won't buy it on priciple. And picking and choosing which customers will get the offer of big discounts off fuel. Idiots don't think we are smart enough to know that they have to make up the price somewhere. Anyway once they have gotten rid of all the competition they won't offer the discount anymore and the price of fuel will go up by 10c at least. I don't use them. Go to the independants. This last election has got me fired up and now I'm becoming more vocal.

I would like to see discounts for years of loyalty eg with health funds and insurance companies.

I would like to be acknowledged as being just as valuable as our younger ones, treated with respect and given some good deals as we have worked hard and done our part for this country.

More help from telcos would be great instead of having to lock in a contract for broadband and phone

What about these great discounts offered to new customers from telcos, electricity& gas suppliers plus insurance companies. But the same discounts are not given to us, their long term loyal customers.

Janet
Janet from QLD replied to Graham:

I agree.. why aren't we recognised for our loyalty and paying our bills on time.. Telstra lost my custom for exactly this reason. It appears that being loyal is not worth anything these days..its all about money!!

Well to suddenly be visible again would be great. I can wait for ages, apparently unseen, in shops. Hopefully smaller energy & insurance prices and discount travel would be wonderful.
