Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Motor vehicle insurances are far too high for retirees, CTP green slips are also HIGH, Medical insurance is unaffordable

Can fiftyupclub make representations to NSW Government to change Workcover Legislation so that workers over 65 can be covered for Workplace Injuries?

Hi Vicki, that's a great idea. It's actually something we were discussing today. We will continue to look into it.

Vicki
Vicki from NSW replied to David - FiftyUp Club:

Probably more important than discounts as many workers who are over 65 are not aware that they are not covered for Workplace Injuries in NSW - each state has different legislation!

Is anyone here actually working on discounts and concessions? All I see are pleas for assistance. I am starting to believe this is just a marketing tool for someone and not a genuine support association.

David - FiftyUp Club
David - FiftyUp Club from NSW replied to Glenn:

Hi Glenn, we're not a support association. We are hoping to generate genuine deals for consumers 50 and up. We believe that the fact these consumers are better customers that we can get them better deals.

Thanks David .... and? What is available? Is there something available yet? I would have thought 25,000 members is worth something to a lot of suppliers. Is there someone signing up service providers and suppliers yet? A simple way to access services is a "rewards card" of some kind that can be issued to members and suppliers recognize this and participate by offering discounted services and goods to this as yet untapped and growing market. If this is happening can you publish a list of participating providers so we can approach them please?

Hi Glenn, offers will be available in the next couple of weeks. We are currently still in negotiations. Thanks for your suggestions, we will take them on board.

Singo what are you actually going to do now there are 25,000 members, what will you actually achieve will you get reductions in valid items like power, rates, transport, fuel, insurance, communication including landline & mobiles, internet, vehicle repairs, tyres, dental, bank fee's, maybe discounts at certain department stores (food & clothing), I do not care about foxtel or if the blahdy seats are too high in the pub if your bank or credit union limits your withdrawls (go elsewhere) Singo achieve valid things not rubbish

Jean
