Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Home & contents plus car insurance need to be realistically tailored to suit the over fifties Fuel, groceries should attract and age discount along the lines of the NSW seniors card

A better deal for people who have worked and paid taxes all their life. We seem to be the forgotten ones. A better health deal for self-funded retirees would be a start.

I paid my house off over my working life with interest rates that started at 8% that went as high as 18% at one stage but still we had to find the cash. I wish I had been able to claim Flybys on all that money.

After working all my life and raising my family I shouldn't have to worry every time I turn on a light or have to cut my shower (water & gas) time down so I can pay my bills. I think twice about using gas heating or airconditioning because of the bills I can't afford to pay. It's outrageous that those who forged this nation are living like third world inhabitants with little or no respect while young, welfare recipients are given full consideration with housing purchase benefits, huge bonuses for having children and assistance with child care...All of which the older generation were never privy to.

Get Woolworths to stop the petrol ripoff in our area ,eg UL 157 in Coffs ?same day on Goldcoast 1.36 makes the 4cent discount a joke.

I would like to receive discounts on everyday living expenses , we have worked all our adult lives and paid all the taxes, I think Australian's who have worked all their lives should receive benefits long before any others who swarm into our beautiful country and bleed us dry.

Please negotiate energy contracts for fixed meter-reading periods, not fixed dates as this disadvantages the consumer - because meters are read at variable times, usually prior to the fixed date of a contract, thus forcing people to extend the contract or lose out financially.

Substantial but genuine discounts on general cost of living expenses especially energy bills - we've worked long and hard all our lives, it's about time the over 50's got a fair deal!
