Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I love the fact that a 23 year old politician has inflammed this discussion. Someone who has never worked in the real world and never will. the problem is not the ageing population, but all the "entitlements" they themsleves take and give to others. We are approaching the time when we will have 1 taxpayer to every 2 welfare recipients. that will impact their tax base dramatically and they know it. Wyatt Roy is concerend that young people will need to pay for pensioners. Those very same pensioners have worked all of their lives, without any handouts, who paid their taxes and now, when they are approaching a time to take it easy, they are having to worry about their future.

I so agree. Most people who will be required to work until they are 70 have been the people that have been working most of their lives. What about the welfare recipients, especially those that have never worked. We, the workers, will have been paying for their fortnightly pay cheque for years. They will have no funds for their retirement so we shall be paying again! Politicians know nothing about the real cost of living or real life.

I would like it very much if you could help with getting better interest rates on investments at the banks, and less fees for the 50+ age group. We are being told we cannot get a pension until we are older, yet how can we live off our savings if we can't get any interest on it. We are very concious of making what savings we have work for us, to help fund our retirement when we get to that point. It is about time the banks think about rewarding their loyal customers who give them the money, which they then loan to others. I am really sick of them offering good interest for the first few months and then the rate drops way down, or they offer great rates for new customers. Then you really need to be on the ball to move the money around every few months to be able to get the better interest rates. This sucks! The other issue I would like to see addressed is the fact that alot of our lovely natural assets that should be accessible for the enjoyment of all are being closed off to the public. It is becoming harder to find free camping spots due to this. I know that a lot of this is due to the fact that a minority of people do the wrong thing and leave the areas in a mess. However, you will find that the majority of the 50+ people will leave any camp site as clean or better than when they arrived.

Increasing the retirement age from 65 to 70....... When will governments learn that they need to stop playing around with superannuation, retirement age etc. If they want people to plan for the future to relieve the impact on the budget, then let people plan for the future with some surety. The "grey" voters need to mark fruitcake politicians (who is very safe on his retirement entitlements) who suggest changes in these areas and give them an early retirement next election.

No way should that happen

how can they want to put the retiring age up to seventy when it is nearly impossible to get a job, after all they are the ones who have wasted my 48 years of tax money.

Why increase the age of pensions to 70? I believe this has happened in part due to the push for our children to go on at school rather that start an apprenticeship at 15 or 16 years of age and pay taxes earlier. If we keep seeing a push for higher education ie uni degrees and so forth even for the most mundane tasks, we will probably push the pension age higher still. And the other obvious bone to throw is Government financial mismanagement!!! There's no more money left in the kitty for those who are retired or retiring...

The Limited nature of the Coles car insurance offer suggests that their normal insurance rate is probably similar to other insurance companies. (ie this is a once off strategy to get your custom). I want an insurance company which has premiums based on age as well as the other factors. We still have a long way to go for real pricing recognition.

Hi Paul, while we can't ensure there to be discounted premiums past the first year, we still believe any saving one can make over the course of a year is worth considering.

In answer to Brett from NSW re bank charges, I'm with a building society that once over 50 or 55 you can have a fee free account - it's called Wisdom Saver and I've been more than happy having this account. The BS offered it to me I didn't have to go looking for it. I still have money put in the account and do all my banking from it. Might be a good idea to look around at more than just the banks.

I would like to see that those who are over fifty get the same recognition, respect and treatment as those who are younger consumers and customers in the business world. Just because we are middle aged and over doesn't mean that we are no longer vibrant consumers. Over fifties have had more life experiences, worked hard, paid taxes, raised children and have been good role models for all the younger generation.

We couldn't agree with you more Michael, those reasons are exactly why we started the FiftyUp Club. Thanks for your feedback and support.

Extending the pension age from 65 to 70 is a disgrace by any responsible government. What are we doing for the young people seeking to take the place of older Australians going to do !!! We must show our committment to assist these groups in creating a solid footing for the future of Australia. When you think of the amount of taxes "we 50+s" have paid as well as the 15% superannuation contribution tax - it must be time for the Australian Government to take on this responsibility! It's sounding like they want us to leave Australia!
