Power Up & Save Campaign visits the home of the world’s most expensive electricity prices!

Christopher Zinn and the FiftyUp Club team visited Adelaide this morning. Surprisingly, South Australians pay 47.13¢ per kilowatt hour, the highest electricity prices than anywhere else in the world!

That is why the Power Up & Save campaign aims to fight back by getting 30,000 people to join together in a bid to use their combined buying power to unlock big discounts on electricity and gas.

The campaign already has over 10,000 registrants in just over a week. What’s damning to see is that while Australians are copping it, many are reluctant to do anything about it.

Registrants were surveyed and we noticed:

  1. 40% of consumers haven’t ever switched electricity or gas before

  2. 45 % are not receiving discounts or are unsure if they are

  3. Only 30% small businesses have switched electricity or gas before

This lack of knowledge about switching and its benefits is still rife in the community, that's one of the main reasons why the Power Up & Save campaign was launched.

10,000 people have joined and have shown that they’re ready to do something about the spiralling cost of energy. It’s not good enough to sit there and complain about increases in energy prices. We want to help people help themselves now by joining in our people power campaign. Anyone can join, if we can get the voice of 30,000 Australians together, we’ll be able to fight back and help save our communities on the ever rising cost of energy.”  the campaign director, Christopher Zinn, said today.

The FiftyUp Club has over 280,000 members nationally and uses their combined buying power to unlock special offers. It’s free to join at www.FiftyUpClub.Com.au.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. Families and Small Businesses can join the campaign for free at www.FiftyUpClub.com.au

2. FiftyUp Club uses the People Power of 1000s of households who join to source group-discounted offers

3. Households decide if the winning offers are right for them and can either switch, negotiate or shop around to save.

No competition for consumers in Far Nth Qld, it's Ergon or nothing. -and that's not just for our power but for most items! The more the item is needed the more expensive it is! I'm sure others in "regional" Aust have the same problem. Maybe the "powers that be" should be made to pay "regional" prices for electricity, petrol, gas, etc. for 6mths / 1 year.

No choice but Ergon in Rockhampton Queensland. The issue that irritates the most is that Ergon continuously charges a "service fee" of 89.572 cents per day which equals about $90 per quarter for what they describe as infrastructure maintenance, ie., maintenance of poles and wires etc, and about $11 per quarter for "meter maintenance" (whatever that is). In total these charges exceed the Qld Govt rebate of about $83 per quarter, so the State is just paying most of the Ergon infrastructure charges and is not actually rebating any electricity costs in terms of KWH. WHAT A RIPOFF. Maybe this is to Ergon's way of recouping the debt transferred to it by the State govt? Ken

In North Queensland we do not have a choice--its ERGON or no power!!!!!! We do not have alternative suppliers. Can somebody fix this???? Are you aware that the Government in Queensland transferred $4 billion in debt from treasury to ERGON?? is this why we are paying too much for our power??? David

Why don't you actually become the power company and buy power from the providers and sell it back. Be one of them, but not with the profits, now that would get them where it hurts. I am sure there would be people out there to do the admin come one guys be the power company come on buy it, at wholes sale prices, its just a matter of the right system

Australia is facing a crisis an energy resources, security, generation and supply and no matter how conscious and careful you are in the use of energy in the home costs are set to escalate further. As for the the discounts on offer they are not actually discounts they are in fact a penalty built into your bill if you you fail to pay by the due or if you fail to take up the so called discount offer. check out the following articles : http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-28/pm-turnbull-urged-to-secure-local-supplies-of-natural-gas/8308542 https://www.google.com.au/search?q=union+letter+to+australian+prime+minister+on+energy&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&ei=N1qWWfatGK_M8ge8kYTwCw

All this hype about savings in electricity can be very misleading. Each circumstance is different and one needs to compare your usage, charges, discounts (and, if you have solar then also the solar feed in tariff) from your OWN electricity bills to assess the real savings. The past 4 bills would be best. I have done this and compared at least 6 providers, and whilst some have bigger discounts they also charge more so the End Result is about the SAME. Electricity companies aren't stupid. They do their comparisons first before baiting us. Fiftyup Club should prepare a simple App so that we can put in our own values and the App will give us the results. All the current Electricity Comparison sites are too simple and can give wrong results. Good Luck!

YEP,I looked at my AGL bill 6 months after moving and said "just not on". I had already sorted the mix up that meant the account number of my old electricity account had become my new gas account number and my electricity number was a new number, meaning my Centrelink deductions were all going to my gas tepid water account, not on electricity. When I questioned my huge increase I received real concern and help. It appeared that my pensioner discount was still on my defunct electricity account and as you can only claim the discount once I was not receiving it. There was also another discount for paying on time (well in advance and always in credit) that was on my gas account but not on my electricity and a $300 credit given. This was done quickly and efficiently over two departments both of which were using well spoken, I suspect, English as a first language, staff. Therefore the advice"ring your supplier and make sure everything is as at the best possible price" really worked for me. Note, some discounts have an expiry date, and mine is one year. This means the date has been listed on a 'transfer page' at the end of my 2017 diary and and will be written in to next years diary 2 weeks before the 'pay on time' deal is due to expire. Good Luck.

Yep to you too, Margaret. I wondered why my 83yo mum's powerbills skyrocketed since AGL had changed account names/number from my late father, who passed 12 months ago. They were given mum's pension details but hadn't acted on discount. I rang them and pointed this out and within minutes her account was credited with 12 months of discounts that were rightfully hers. Give your provider a nudge if you are not happy!
