Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually. 

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

government and councils to treat us more fairly. look after seniors that have worked and paid taxes all their lives, instead of spending millions on boat people and overseas aid to people that have never paid a cent to australia. discounts from business and better service which seems to be lacking in the younger generation.

There is discrimination within goverment itself and the Real Estate industry makes it impossible to make an application on line if you are a pensioner out of the work force for 5 years or more. The fact that you are on the pension means you are on a very limited income.

Thanks Henry, I will do that. Actually when considering the political aspect and that 2010 election I can't help but recall one of Rudd's more damaging cabinet leaks about Gillard to the media, with respect to a policy federal Labor was considering to raise the aged Pension, to which Gillard allegedly commented words to the effect 'why should we bother raising the pension, they don't vote for us'. From memory they did eventually raise it despite Julia & mercifully we are now rid of her and Rudd from the federal political scene, and whilst Labor tends to traditionally pitch it's policies to the younger (and more naive) voters in the electorate and we'll probably fair a bit better under the Libs, pensioners are still not getting anywhere near the recognition we deserve from our elected representatives. From memory the newly sworn in Abbott cabinet doesn't even have a 'Ministry for the Aged' anymore. Perhaps it is time we had a more vocal say in Federal politics!

Don't be fooled that the libs will be a panacea for all ills, they traditionally look after the big end of town, the battlers will need to take them to task. Australia is an ageing population requiring more services for aged which costs much money, governments have a rising billfor us over 50s. Perhaps the government could establish non-profit cooperative retirement villages for less well off instead of growing profits to high priced commercially sold units.

I am reliably informed Bob that the legal age to criticise has been lowered to 54yo. It looks to me like Christmas with profiling to achieve outcomes is upon us. Fine, as long as we are in control with product suitability,cost and personal choice the imperative. My senses have been titillated and thus far the smell is fine to the idea of club. It's my remaining senses which require the appropriate stimulation. I want too see, taste and feel the benefits of the club. We, that is the boss and I are on a SMEP (self managed electricity plan ) for 2 years with 1 to go. Yes Bob we are with you, and collectively not hold our breath. As a sign of solidarity and maturity.
