$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Here's one example. A few years ago just before I turned 50 wondered about the accuracy of all the various Political opinion polls a before the last few elections & complaining to my wife that I have never been polled & wondering who was. Ironically I was eventually contacted by a well known political polling company a week or two before the 2010 election & when I enthusiastically informed them I'd be happy to answer their questions, the first question they asked was 'Are you under 50 years of age' I said yes, I'm 49 they replied 'well thats good as we don't poll anyone over 50'! So what is that supposed to mean I wonder, these companies conducting the polls don't consider that anyone over 50 has an opinion which is worth considering. A bit bizzare considering we're still allowed to vote.

Danny: those people and our politicians don't want to admit we exist, they prefer to place us on the "forgotten ones" list, the has been group. I don't like this so I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). They are looking at being represented in Canberra to ensure those guys over there do admit we do and to create policies tailored to our needs. Your comments make me believe you may wish to go to that site and investigate. I did, I joined and I have never looked back.

I'm tired of everytime I get my insurance bills, that I have to ring them up and haggle to get a discount, even though I have been with them for 30 years. I would like them to recognise my loyalty.

Hi Jose, Thank you for your feedback and welcome to the FiftyUpClub! I am sure most people would agree with your comment and the team here are looking at all feedback for future discounts and campaigns. Insurance has been a popular topic of conversation so fingers X for a better deal in the future! :-D

I want to see loyalty rewarded for continued support of a service provider. For example I am about to change from my power provider of 5 years to get a lower price, Only on calling to advise of the change do they advise me that they could lower my existing charges. Hopefully the Fifty Up Club as a large group buyer can influence service providers to want to keep established business.

Hi all just asked a question in chat room it was the wrong format question was and anyone can answer you are laid off work or sacked you cannot get centrelink payment to assist you and family if your spouse works. Why is this do you not pay individual taxes so are you not individuals when it comes to centrelink or Social security and why are pensioners lumped together as a couple and not individuals. Why do asylum seekers and immigrants (new) get payments for each individual is this a case for the High court of Australia to determine in a class action.

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Robert:

Robert: There are quite a lot of inefficiencies in how Centrelink operates and how they interpret some rulings. Also, some of these rulings are totally wrong and in need of change or deletion. This club (I believe) will get quite a number of discounts due to the amount of people they have managed to attract. What they will not get though are said needed changes. This is why I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that is looking to be represented in Canberra where laws and legal changes take place. We seniors, have neve ever had representation there so I believe is about time we do. Again, should The Seniors Party get the numbers (like this club) they will be able to do so much. The numbers are out there, they need to be attracted to this Party.
