$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I hope that over 50's will receive better deals on services.

I think they can help us make better use of our dollar by showing us where the discounts are. Maybe two single meals or servings in a pack of two or three. I recently bought a Indian Butter Sauce and it served four, couldn't add the cream as I needed to freeze some it. I think it will serve to make businesses aware that a lot of people are on their own and need to buy single serves of perishable items

Thats how the supermarkets make their money selling bulk however, it must be said that if we were in some other country and culture we would pool our resources you buy the meat I buy the veges and frozen goods next bloke buys the other stuff all to the same value and we share and we eat a good meal the other way is put the left overs in the freezer for next week. Robert: Yes we pool our resources - our human resources. Numbers count, therefore if any by sheer numbers this club will be successful. I found a Party: The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that is looking at doing similarly - they are looking at get representation in Canberra to assist us with our needs and I for one decided to get behind them - it can only be beneficial for us!

what is your age bracket 50 - 55, 55-60

Robert
Robert from NSW replied to Barry:

Why I asked that question would depend on whether you are still in the work force and paying exorbitant taxes or have you retired and living on the bread line like allot of our older folk, who I must say are not computer savvy and do not have a computer and will be missing out on this forum or discounts I am sure will occur with the numbers of people out there in this club.So I am in my final years of work transitioning to retirement and I am scared of the prospect that I will not have enough money to live on for my twilight years. The cost of living has gone up and the rents are bloody bad and where will we live and what will we be able to afford, these are the questions one must think about and your ulcers get bigger. Bob

Robert: You speak the truth and very well I may add. Please have a look at The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). I know they are looking for people like you. You will be doing us all a favour.

Terry: and free transport throughout Australia. I feel it would be cheaper for all governments not to charge to pensioners: no need for extra staff, no need to have these expensive tickets printed, faster motion of people in and out of train stations, etc. This club will give us the discounts we need by the sheer number of members they already have. I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to achieve, through policies radical changes. They are looking at getting representation in Canberra and this something we need badly, wouldn't you say so?
