$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

A better deal for the large portion of people that have supported this country through hard work and taxes all their life. We are becoming the forgotten ones.

Joseph: We have become the forgotten ones. This club will get discounts for us - they have 30 thousand members already! What they cannot get is the other benefits that only if represented in Canberra we could obtain. I found The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) is aiming at just that, they want to know what your needs are, they will be turning these needs into policies and put across the table for voting. Now: this is something we don't have at present and seeing we are so many surely we can succeed. What's your opinion here?

Better representation with service providers resulting in improved service and lower costs

A better deal for volunteers who are not covered by personal accident insurance when working for a volunteer agency, eg Quota, once they are over 80. Many over-80s are physically active and many more are mentally active and capable of volunteering for a range of duties.

Wayne: I found a party that is aiming exactly at that, it's called The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). I joined them and truthfully have not looked back since. This club will get us discounts galore. What they cannot get for us are laws to ensure we are better looked after. Please go to their website, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Just got back from a cruise, and told by Centrelink that pension could be cut off if I did not inform them of the date of return, unfortunately I was sick on landing for a few days and tried four times to contact centrelink by phone, there was a one an ansering machine stating a hour wait, I did hang on for forty minutes four times over the three days and then had to go there in a sick state by bus. PLEASE ask Mr. Hank Jongon to fix an easy line for urgent calls for oldies.

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Anthony:

Anthony: The best way to get Mr Jongon to react is by sheer numbers. I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to ensure to be represented in Canberra where laws are made to ensure my needs will be looked into. Should they (the party) get the numbers this club has (30 thousands) they will be heard, believe you me. You may like to go into their website and have a look at it. I did and I thought their thoughts are quite remarkable.

The respect from government and orginasions for the years of taxes paid to contribute to building our country to what it is today ,Take away the red tape involved whenever you seek some assistance with centrelink and other government burocratic organisations .Make it easier for older Australians , boat people get more help than people born here after the war . if i was to enter via smugglers with my identity i would be 200% better off
