$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Governments should stop subsidising solar panel installations. Solar Panels haven't reduced our dependence on coal produced electricity. (Solar Panels do not work at night and have minimal effect on wet, dull and winter days). Those of us who don't have them or can't have them (e.g.unit owners) are subsidising those who do with our higher electricity prices.

Theo From Revesby. In general would be great to receive discounts in large bills like insurance. I have heard of "Grey Nomads" but I get the impression is for the ones that are well off and affording to go on trips around the country. Perhaps 50Up will get fill the gaps.

Consideration for equality in pricing eg driving for over 40 years with minimal at fault claims, there should be consideration for further discounts.

Ron from NSW, All General Medical Practitioners my wife and I have attended over the past decade or more have bulk billed. However we have recently been charged the full amount by some 'specialists'. These bills have been very high. Now in our mid seventies such costs can have quite a very negative impact upon our budget. Surely it would not make much difference to the living standard of such specialist if they could adopt a universal policy for the elderly and give us a break.

Ronald: I couldn't agree with you more and this is why I joined this Club. I also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) as I feel adding support from Canberra to our needs could not be a bad combination.

Cheaper Electricity & Insurances, better service & options for payment. I also believe Green slip insurance is absolute disgrace when you pay full comprehensive insurance, why should we have to pay twice,if the government forced everyone to have comprehensive insurance before they could register there vehicle everyone would have insurance & comprehensive insurance would cover everyone who is injured in a car accident just like in the UK. When Green slip insurance was first introduced it was only put in place to pay off the debt that the Motor accidents authority lost which apparently was millions when it was handed over to them by the government & I was informed by someone senior in the RTA at the time he guaranteed me that when the debt was payed off that we would abolish the Green slip but because people did not complain about it, that is why the Government left it on there because it brings in millions of dollars & I find it totally unfair & least this way everyone would be forced to have there vehicles insured.

Strong words John, but real! I joined this Club because as a member of The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) I feel this Club will assist us in getting better prices and The Seniors Party will add value by having representation in Canberra, something we are in desperate need.

self funded people should be given a health card were is the respect after working and paying all the taxes ,

Henry from NSW commented:

This is what us over 50's lack: respect! We should be treated like VIP's in this country with all the work and innovations we put into place during our working life. What we really need (apart from this great Club) is good representation in Canberra. This is why I have also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that hopefully will complement this much needed Party.
