$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I was appalled to note that when the Carbon Tax was introduced on 1 July 2012, our provider, Energy Australia reduced our average daily quantity of 19.1781 kWh per billing day to only 10.9589 kWh per billing day. When queried, Energy Australia told me that it was the Government's instruction to them to encourage us to use less electricity. This is totally unfair as usage always rises in winter and in extreme heat. Now at a little over 1000 kWh per billing day our Spring and Autumn bills also are penalised as our usage was usually just under the old allowance of 19.1781 kWh. This means that any amount of electricity over the current average daily quantity allowed is calculated and charged at a higher rate. Will the Liberal Government instruct them to desist in this practice and restore the pre-Carbon Tax threshold of 19.1781 kWh.

My honest opinion: The only way we are going to be able to fight these monster is at their own game. This is why I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to fight for representation in Canberra and produce policies to counteract these bad boys.

As the man said "" Ask not what my country can do for me but what I can do for my country' .What I would like to see is a tariff on all imported goods,(our turn for a fair go on the "" level playing field. Then the automatic deportation of any foreign born who breaks our laws, Parents of underage criminals held responsible for their off springs actions. Then when they get that done pull down that eyesore of an expressway and give us back our Circular Quay followed by OUR own original Sydney Showground. Refrain from calling footballers heroes'A hero is a young legless Digger I know. And never, never denigrate and defile our flag by wearing it as "Superman cape. I came into this wonderful country under that flag and I will go out under it.Boyang.

Anonymous: Now you are talking my language> I have always been an advocate of deporting those bad boys WITH THE WHOLE OF THEIR FAMILY and not let them in again. Most of these guys do all those dreadful things for the benefit of their families and they start to see that their families dreadfully disadvantaged should they get caught I think they will think twice before making their next bad mood. I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to see if we over 50's can get representation in Canberra and is there where laws are made! I tell you another thought I have had for quite a while now: we should push for free public transport for us: I believe it cost them more in infrastructure, employees and materials to charge than to give it to us for free. Think about it. What's your opinion!

My one wish and hope is that all foreign goods be subjected to a large import duty. That the boats be stopped ,that citizenship be renounced for any who break our laws. That the parents of those underage criminals be held responsible. Then pull down the the xpress way and give us back our Circular Quey. Then when you have finished give us back our ORIGINAL Sydney Showground.

more bargaining power to get better discounts on insurances , travel, energy bills, pharmaceuticals etc

Henry from NSW replied to ken:

ken: I believe there is a combination of powers that could be very beneficial for us: this Club will get discounts for us, but we need representation in Canberra to achieve the legal aspects, policies that will benefit us greatly. Please have a look at The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org), one that I joined and find it will fill a much needed gap for us.

Janice: I couldn't agree with you more! Two weeks ago I contacted a travel agency to enquire about a trip they had to Kakadu National Park (something I have always wanted to do). I enquire is they gave seniors a discount, the lady on the other side of the phone told me (with great pride, I may add) that they did: 2 dollars, yes, you heard correctly: TWO DOLLARS! I told her she had rather say no instead of insult us with that kind of reply. Apart from this new Club I have also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org), because I believe we badly need to be represented in Canberra where changes really occur.
