$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I contacted Click Energy & changed over to them from AGL. I have had nothing but dramas with them since. First of all they signed me up & sent out the rates sheet with a welcome letter, only trouble was the rates chart was for a household with Solar Power. I then called Click Energy & they sent me out supposedly the right rates sheet, but once avail it wasnt , it was rates from another provider in my area! I once again called Click energy & talked to a female call operator who told me to wait until I got my first bill & then I would know what my rates were! I then demanded that I speck to a Supervisor, who once again received an topology for being totally mucked around. When he advised me of the correct rates for my area, these were quite a deal higher than my existing provider, AGL. Talk about a shambles, if this is the way the Fifty Up Club is going to negotiate & provide deals for members, they need to be more thorough in seeking out deals!!! Very disappointed, also have a real good loo at the life insurance deal, the term of the cover, most people are still alive at termination of cover!!!

Was watching news about the last Jay Leno show - reason being that the average viewer was 57 years old. The TV network was only interested in younger viewers. What does that tell you about big corporations and their interest in over 50s. I find this very confusing, as in my case, I watch MORE TV now that I am retired, travel more and enjoy going out more....consequently I have become a better consumer........so why no interest in the over 50s from big corporations. What does everyone else think.

Hi Roger, this is one of the reasons the FiftyUp Club formed! We believe that over fifties are indeed better consumers and thus deserve better attention!

Banks themselves do not manage clients' wealth portfolios. The financial services that do are under a separate legal entity. The banks rely on consumers believing they are dealing with a bank and therefore assume their money is safe. Oh yes, there is a disclaimer somewhere in the wad of a statement of advice paperwork, usually in fine print. How about issuing two separate statements in addition to the statement of advice - one expressly stating that XXX financial services Ltd is NOT a bank and therefore there are no guarantees, the other expressly stating that loss of capital can occur in a market downturn and the client understands that they can lose money. Also a capital guarantee is only as good the company offering it. Who remembers Estate Mortgage with their guaranteed 18%+ returns?? As a separate issue, many focus on low mortgage rates and this has hit retirees and anyone else trying to save money - our income personally is now 1/4 of what it used to be. Yet personal loans, business loans and credit card rates are in the double digits. Why don't we start hounding the powers that be to tie term deposit rates to 2% lower than the current credit card rate of that provider. Now wouldn't that make the banks sit up and howl!!

a comment about the current debate on money matters A great start would be to reduce credit card percentage costs (some over 20 percent) Users unable to repay the debt .The banks too hungry and not considering their customers welfare.

In the good old days they were honest pollies but todays lot are there to boost their pay packets and to hell with us. How about looking after the Aussies. To hell with the illegal immigrants. If they came into the country legally, they wouldn't have the problems they have. I don't feel sorry for them. There are too many migrants now. Look after your own, Mr. Abbott. Forget the rest. We were born and bred here but we don't get the perks these migrants get. Look after us first.

I have checked the electricity offer and compared with my supplier. there was some savings to be made if I switched. When I contacted my present supplier they made me an even better offer than advertised on the FiftyUp club prices. Always good to compare and ask your present supplier to match or better the offer. Looking forward to some savings on electricity bills !
