$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I like what Paul has said- our reserves are going no where- and I have a roll over pension- but the Govt sets how much I can draw each month. This is what I have saved in the past- and if I don'tr want to take all the amount the Govt says- why should I be made to do this. I par tax on my money and now have to declare interest on the money they force ma to take out. The Govt. gets it both ways and the plodder loses it. Brian from NSW.

Government reviews, they seem to be reviewing everything except themselves, they pay themselves ever increasing 'wages and allowances, and hand out billions of dollars to overseas countries in aid and gifts and expect us to grin and bare it. About time pollies looked in the mirror to find some monetary cuts, there's far to much waste, and the people who made this country are sick of paying the bill.

I'm disgusted in the attitude of politicians that continually attack the middle and low incomes. Every time they need money they take the easy way out. I've worked for forty years and have only seen the conditions of workers and pensioners being continually eroded ie- spouse rebate wagesand privatisation. Why aren't politician's wages and superannuation restricted to the same % increase as workers 2% under the CPI index and go backwards like us.

What about Queensland, is there somewhere we can donate, one of the banks or credit unions setting up an $10.00 appeal, even us pensioners can afford that, or are that lot from the Gold coast who set up relief stuff in the last drought back in business yet?

I took up car insurance and pay monthly, I have roadside service and am saving about $45 a month! I also insured my house and contents and am saving about $50 a month! I recently changed over to AGL for my electricity and am on a contract, (I changed for the flybuy points offered). I am on a pension and the savings really are worth the trouble of changing over. ps. NRMA charge a fee of $40 per policy for closing accounts. SUCKS!

Hi all. The pension...Why do the government asset test our homes, or how much money we have saved all our lives...criky, are we are going to borrow on our home if we need money during retirement??... how would we pay it back? how could we pay it back??..from our pension? hahahaha !!! not likely, we would go broke. Or, is the governemnt going to take our house when we die for fail to pay debt from borowings??? Like most older Australian's, I have worked hard all my working life to secure my home so i don't have a mortgage when i retire, have some savings to use..I've paid my taxes and contributed to the community, so why make my life difficult and stressful Mr Hocking just because you can't balance the government books and make things work for you. Try this Mr. Hocking..Why not place a little more tax on the wealthy minning companies......foreign bussinesses operating in this country,..cutting politicians super payments would help..stop pollies outrages retirement benifits... use small car's for government use...use normal jets for moving pollies around...give all ministers a budget to work within (just as we have to).... STOP all the useless royal commissions...just because there are so many aged people ( baby boomers) is not our fault so why crucify us...instead Mr.Abbott, you should be helping us ...why? because we are many many voters and one day politicians just might wake up and see that.. that's if they can get past their ego's and B.S. Someone said to me that we are a 'back to front country'..our government's give everything to those who are capable people, who do nothing, who don't support this country, don't pay taxes and don't work and we crucify the one's who work hard , pay taxes and give back to community..should it not be the other way round? it's time to stop the bludgers and free loaders Mr.Abbott.... The government should invest in clean industries...and support Australian discoveries so they are not bought by overseas companies .

Good rant Paul, I don't recall anywhere that says those who are already retired and on pensions will be affected, and tell us this ! why not be asset tested? lets face it if you worked hard and have a good pile of investments and assets behind you why use the safety net designed to assist those that are less fortunate ? Why cry foul now if you are comfortably off when probably in the past, accountants have structure your earnings , investments etc to pay as little tax as possible. Lets remember Mr Hockey has only been Treasurer for a few months , he did not create the problems. And why would you be borrowing? it's the age old story, live with in your means, it's not hard, we have a budget and live very comfortable on our pensions , Go see the Center link financial adviser if you need help. Paul I guess you just have to learn (we all have to by the look of things) that our economy is based on taking care of the profligate at the cost of the prudent. Hence the avaricious looks coming from the government towards those who have anything irrespective of how humble it might be or how long and how hard they have worked to obtain it.

Yep still self envolved . It's all about you. What you have, what you got, what you want others to do for you, you,so important, so glorious you. Any concerns out there re the plight of the drought affected farmers? Come on, out of the many many thousands of Fifty Up Club members surely at least 10 of you are concerned, well prehaps 8. Then let's aim for 7. It won't be for long, and then we can all enjoy more months of me, me, me.

It's car insurance renewal time for me so I did my usual research by way of online quotes to try & find the best deal to re-insure my 12 month old Hyundai ix35. I have never before considered Coles insurance as a possible alternative until I received an offer from flybuys to the effect that I would receive 10000 points if I insured my car with Coles insurance. So I included Coles in my research & I have decided to go with them. The are backed by Wesfarmers of course, their product disclosure statement reads very comparably with the others, my friends in the auto body repair business gave me good reports, and the premium with comparable features & excesses is in round figures $100 annually less than the best of the rest. The flybuy points are of course a bonus. Hopefully I will never have to find out whether my crossover is worth it or not but I guess time will tell. Anyone have any experience either way with them?
