$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

That's Ok. I don't want foxtel myself, but I was thinking of those with different needs. Hopefully we are all in this together.

Yes I agree many seniors are either not able to get out much, cannot afford it or for whatever reason their life can largely revolve around the television for some form of entertainment. Companies such as Foxtel or Austereo should introduce packages eg movies with sport at a vastly reduced rate to assist these folk with who are over 50.

Paul: People's power is the way to go! This is why I have also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org): having this organisations putting pressure on commercial institutions and The Seniors Party putting pressure in Canberra it can only be positive for us.

Of course by banding together we can and should negotiate better deals. I love the idea of a forum like this where mature people can dialogue. I have read about the rising cost of medicine. We can use his blog to tell each other of deals. I had both cataracts done. I have top private cover but still needed to pay 1000's dollars as a "gap" I am a retired doctor so know the system. I found a fabulous surgeon in North Sydney who accepted a "no gap" deal. Beautiful rooms, excellent service. I then went to my referring doctor and told her I wished to be referred to that doctor. She had no choice but comply. Result......20:20 vision at no extra cost!

Paddy, so do I! This is why I am also a member of The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). With this FiftyUp Club on one side and The Seniors Party putting pressure on MP's in Canberra can only benefit us all.

I'm pretty savy these days. Almost scrooge like. If it's more than $25 say, I won't buy it unless I really need it. Most of the time I stop at $15. Another thing is I look at it and ask myself do I need it and where would I put it. If I can't answer I don't buy. I do a lot of shopping online (trusted sites) and find I get great deals.

Henry from NSW replied to Ann:

Ann: My thoughts exactly, this Club could put pressure on all of those companies that are trying to squeeze the last dollar from us. Yesterday, I went to Coles and to my amazement I found they were charging $8.98 for ONE KILO of tomatoes - I asked them if I could lay by for Christmas. This is why I also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org): having this Club pushing on one side and this Party putting pressure in Canberra on the other side it can only benefit us all!

I absolutely loathe the punitive health gaps associated with private health insurance. Private health costs themselves are costly enough without the added burden of paying gap fees whilst in addition the government has removed the rebate for those who pay late penalty for joining. I am also sick of all the gouging that goes on.little things like booking fees then an added charge for using a credit card,on line mind you. I believe that ticketed are responsible for inflated prices to events such as live theatre etc.I can go on and on. I heard today that one needs $57,000 plus to have decent retirement lifestyle. Arn't we becoming too expensive a place to live for most
