$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Max: We should be treated like VIP's rather than the "I hope you disappear" group. I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) when I discover their main objective is exactly this: to try to get for us what is due to us! After all pensions are not a benefit, but a right.

I just joined this site - I am hoping , that the information they asked for is not going to cause me heaps of people trying to sell me insurance and solar panels etc etc - like that the last site i joined !! - I'm trusting it is for us over 50 and looking for a fair deal -- and fun to boot --- :))))))

Its good that many people are mentioning that the 50 & over need discounts for services. What about company's like Bunnings they give 10% discounts to trade people but nothing to the over 50 home handy man or retired trade person. Wouldn't it be good if we had a card for a 10% discount. After all Bunnings drove out the local hardware store & now charge 300% mark up on many products. As a retired trades person I would spend $1000,s of $ per year at their store & I get no discount. Perhaps a few of the other big time stores could be talked into a special credit card, Bing Lee, The good guys, Masters, coles, Woolworths, Petrol Stations. there is a lot of $ gouging going on in Australia perhaps it's time to stop the rip off.

Stephen: My sentiments exactly! A card f to be used to get discounts in places like Bunnings ( I call Bunnings the biggest toy store for adults in the world!). I am a member of The Seniors Party (www.seniorspary.org) and it appears this is one of their aims: a member's card that carries the power of discounts.

The Australian Govt really need to look after the Pensioners instead of handing out dole to bludgers, this really gets me red in the face!!

I hope that this movement will give us "oldies" a fair go when it comes to power, water and travel. Also better access to medical facilities.

A random pick through the members shows most of them live in NSW. Does that mean most of the discounting outcomes will be NSW based?

Barry from Ingleburn I would like to see most businesses stop asking me to speak to them via a "call centre" and really start to listen to their customers.
