$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

as a transplant recipient I need to keep my teeth in really good shape,as bad teeth can go through the body,I m 56 and have to work a lot of overtime to afford to go to the dentist,Im getting to old for this as it is a very physical job

I agree, dentistry should be fully covered under Medicare, with no gap Ha Ha. Also I would also like to see Medicare cover Vet bills for a companion animal ie a Cat, Dog etc as it is a fact elderly folk living with a pet are healthier than those who don't have one so the Health Budget would actually be in better shape if we old fogies had a pet.

Thanks Keith, glad to see I am not alone on the rip off dentist fees.

Hopefully reduced utility charges for a start they are really getting out of control. I cannot afford after 35 years private health insurance and if I need to have any major medical of dental work done I will be heading overseas as many of my friends have to get the work done. One of my friends has recently returned from Thailand where he had major dental work done for less than one third the price he was to pay here. This is ridiculous and more jobs will be lost to overseas if the government don't look at things like this. After paying taxes since I was 16 for 40 years surely we should be getting something back. Would it be possible to open an over 50s hospital using money from super funds and employ people predominately over the age of 50 to work in these hospitals? Is that a stupid question?I hope this scheme helps relieve the stress on over 50s that's why I'm joining.

Dental is a real problem for us all,you know a all on 4 dental implant in Aussie will cost about $20000.00 in Canada it costs about $3000.00,you can have a great holiday in Canada have new teeth and even get about $8000.00 change, Aussie dentists need to pull there fees into line, health insurance for dental is a great big rip off as well, and why in dental not classed as health with medicare, are teeth not part of the human body?governments should considering covering dental as well,Ok for these pollies they have all the learks and perks even if they are useless at there jobs.

To right

Here's a hint Karl, you MUST shop around. Ask around and seek out experienced dentists who rarely accept new customers because they're too busy. Reason? Advertising is against their moral code, hence any medics who advertise prove without a doubt that they're shonky and/or desperate for customers! I repeat SHOP AROUND!

I would like to see the Fifty Up Club join the fight on the excessive fuel prices in Tasmania, about 20 cents above the big island prices. Power costs are also excessive due to the Tasmanian Government past practices of using money from the next power source to pay for power sources.

If it wasn't for 2gb we'd still be sitting under a mushroom. Kept in the dark. Thank god for alan, ray, chris and ben and all presenters for alerting the population as to what is going on in our beautiful country. Go 2gb
