$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Dina: Another way you will get your needs become reality is by joining the party I joined: The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). Their aim is to get representation in Canberra to turn our needs into policies and then fight to get them through. Please check them out and if you like them so will your friends. Good luck!

It would be great to be able to put pressure to bare on the big banks to not be so greedy ie fees, honour fees, credit card fees etc, more competition amongst business to keep them honest and prices at a sensible level, better and cheaper housing, more affordable Health care, as that is becoming so expensive, cheaper petrol, cheaper rents, give us a break.

Yvonne: Spot on! I went a step further: I joined a Party I found, it's The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). Their aim is to get representation in Canberra to also put pressure, but on politicians to start listening to those that have worked hard all their life. have a look at it, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Reduced living costs. This may be outside the Over 50 Club charter, extension of pensioner benefits to self funded retires.

Frank: I feel the same as you. This is why I went a step further and also joined a Party I found, it's The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). Their aim is once getting representation in Canberra to draft policies that will cover, amongst other subjects pensioners and self-funded retirees, then pushed through the right channels to have them approved. Go into their site and have a look at it, I've got the feeling that (just like me) you will like what you see. And if you like it so will be your friends. Have a go!

oh how I would like to see the pensioners get a fair go electricity goes up pension stays the same fuel pension stays the same are they wanting us to disappear so they can keep our money we paid taxes all our lives and what do we get a kick in the guts while we are down my suggestion is the politicians drop their wage right down and stop the 3000,000 a year for the rest of their life what do you think they need to look at the money they rake in for themselves all we want is to have enough to pay our bills and live our lives in comfort

Maree: You speak my language! Please have a look at a Party I found, it's called The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). Your words are exactly what they're aiming at. Once they get representation in Canberra (something all pensioners need badly!) they want to turn our needs into policies and fight to get them through. We are not going to be the "forgotten group" any more if we believe this Party can do something for us. Please have a look at it, I think you are going to like it. And if you like it so will your friends. Have a go at it!

After a life time working for the Man and the community at large I would like to see better recognition for my contribution to the public as having been a volunteer St John Ambulance First responder for 30 years public servant in the Q health ICU in a major Hospital and again as a volunteer Red Cross emergency services member 4 to date seeing quality discounts on my Rates, Urban Utilities, Gas, Power bills, insurances - car/s - home and contents - life, public transport and quality health support all of which are skyrocketing beyond my capacity to earn but! not just for me! but everyone who has worked all their life to benefit our families but the community at large! we have created the spoils so to speak for the following population that follows, we deserve that respect and recognition

Dina
Dina from QLD replied to Robert:

you have right in what you are saying there is no recognition for us and we all have contributed one way or an other to make Australia for what it is now.

Robert: When I started to read your comments I thought I was reading something from a Party I found: The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org), this is exactly what they say and their main aim is to get representation in Canberra to push for our needs. We are not represented in the land of the law and we need it badly. Please visit their site, I think you are going to like it. And if you so will your friends. Good luck!

The car insurance we presently pay here in QLD is way too high. Lets get the Coles Group on board for both our cars and home insurance. When you have paid home insurance continually for 36 years and never made one claim, we are still penalized because of where we reside.

Hi Iyle, we want to move into QLD as soon as we have enough members there. Thanks for the feedback. We hope to be able to provide you a good deal.
