$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I've read a few of the comments. To start with the Coles Insurance only applies to NSW according to the terms and conditions, then again payouts to One big Switch and 2GB. Then Westfarmers take their commission. I just wonder then what is left to buy one's insurance. Also the car insurance is only applicable to 1 year, then one has to shop around again. Worth it??

Obtain some well deserved discounts and recognition instead of being invisible and discrimated against many of us would like to be working even if part time & 'paid' for it

It'd be great if the Club could lobby the insurance and utility companies to provide discounts collectively as even though we're reducing energy and water consumption, the costs continue to rise. Our age group are a reduced risk for insurance, we are at home longer and our vehicles are parked at home most of the time and we drive less often. Its a no brainer! Good luck:)

Everyone would like to get a similar deal. When will thousands of members outside NSW be able to do this.

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Sylvia:

Sylvia: This club has 30 thousand plus members, you will see results very shortly, mainly due to the sheer numbers they have. I went a bit further: I joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) to ensure we get representation in Canberra. Please go to their site and see for yourself: you will not be disappointed.

I agree Fiona from Qld. I would like to see something in place for the small business people, most of them over 50 and the costs for them to keep their shops open is disgusting. There needs to be more help for them. Save the local shop and support them as much as possible. Coles and Woolworths have a lot to be accountable for !!!!

As I'm on the old age pension I find that the cost of living is very hard to cope with the cost of living and its hard to servibe on the pension.

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Michael:

Michael: Just like me I need more discounts. I believe this club will get them for us due to the amount of members they already have. I decided to go further and joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) because I am of the opinion we badly need representation in Canberra to show all those fat cats over there we do exist and demand respect. Have a look at it, you will not be disappointed.
