$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Welfare scams should be investigated and stopped. They are absolutely rife. Why should those who have paid taxes all their lives work their bums off even longer so others can sit on theirs thinking of more ways to rip off the system? Of course some welfare recipients are genuine and honest but unfortunately too many are not. Do not raise retirement age to 70- leave the worker alone and tackle the real problem!!!!

The $100 off insurance deal from Coles isn't exclusive to us. It's a guarantee they make to anyone. I just saw it on their "Little Red Quote" TV advert! Why is it being presented to us as something exclusive?? Thats two "special deals" now that were just a re-hash of an offer already available to anyone. I hope this isn't how it's always going to be but seriously, I'm starting to wonder. This club has been going for weeks now and NOT ONE actual deal or product has been tailored to us. A re-hash is something marketing people are always throwing at us because they don't see us as a worthwhile market group. Please don't dress up any more "re-hash" attempts as something "special" for us.

Bob, when I joined the Fifty Up club I was hoping it was genuine, that is deals for people fifty and up, something special for us, it now appears that by reading the comments here, especially in relation to the Coles car insurance 'deal' that it is as it seems, just another collection of junk mail. :(

Be aware that the Fifty Up Club receives a $30 'kick back' from Coles every time a Fifty Up member signs up for the 'special' insurance deal, a deal that is being offered to anyone over fifty. Readers of these forum comments will also be aware that it seems Coles might not have the best insurance deals at all anyway..I for one am out of here.

More discounts for over 50's, goods tailored for our needs, clothes larger than size 8. Cheaper insurance and water costs, discounts on registration... we have less accidents and keep our cars registered and insured and I am sure younger people don't bother. I would like to have some money left over at the end of the month for house repairs, car repairs and god forbid an annual holiday.

Price around every year when renewing all types of insurance for the "introductory deal". It works! If we work till 70 or more, where will the jobs come from for the young ones? Time to alter pension accessibility for the politicians. If they be come unemployed, then they can apply to Centrelink for assistance just like the rest of us when misfortune befalls us.

I am disappointed. We are in our 70s and have a rating 1 and have had it for years. I put in our details and we had a quote of $200 more than we are already paying. I put in the same details, but a younger driver age, and it dropped $200 how can you say we are safer drivers and penalise us for our age ???

Hi all, At the moment my car is insured with Allianz, my premium is $1,700, Coles premium was $1,980. Unfortunatley I will be staying with Allianze. But please keep trying 50sup.
