$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I have worked & paid taxes for 52 years! Should we seniors now be made to feel guilty, a burden on society because we have retired? By all means allow those that wish to work past 65 to do so, but, do not heap guilt on those that are unable to. Let's show all the business, retailers, insurance companies etc. that we are a force to be reckoned with!

HI All. In regard to retirement, i think it depends on the individual, i don't see it a problem it as long as the government still have the pension available if we 'want to retire' between 65 and 70. I also hope we have someone who knows about politics to fight for us in the coming elections.''WE HAVE A VOICE'' lets use it to get a better deal for. One other issue i find a bit distasteful, if the retirement age goes to 70 will we be able to get income insurance longer than 59? Why is it now 59 when we retire at 65?

Yes Paul, good question there, I guess the government will want us to have our own insurance, that's also a query, who will cover us??

I will be turning 67 next month, & would like to retire within the next 12 months. I have worked since I was 15 & would like to enjoy my life soon, with grandkids & crafty things. Why don't they lower the eligibility rate for the pension instead?

I do hope we all get something going here, fuel, food , health insurance, we deserve a break, the next 40 years would be a nice break, just make it a lot easier for us and we will spend the extra on enjoyment!

After looking at the poll today on retirement age. I hope we can make our voices heard. I would love to retire before I get carried out in a wooden box. I want to see this wonderful country and plan to do it on retirement. I have worked for most of the time since leaving school just before I turned 15. I raised my two children virtually on my own and now it is my turn to have a life. I think we should be able to retire at 60 but it not be compulsory. I am tired and just want to relax and enjoy what years I have left.

I just got the paperwork for my 2 cars & yes, they did lower the premium by $101 on each policy. However after reading the fine print so to speak I won't be taking it up. If written off my current insurer will replace my car with a new one for the first 10 years, Coles 2 years. My car is 2 years old this month. My current hire car option is for as long as it takes to repair / replace mine, Coles 14 days max. If you get a good deal, good luck to you, but please make sure you are comparing apples with apples

Agreed we should compare all the options,my current insurer only replaces my 2012 car(s)for the first 2 yrs, having said that when a certain BIG insurer offered 10 yr replacement i remember seeing in the fineprint in the ad that it would be the SAME model ....subject to availability.
