Best NBN plans from the brands you know and trust

If your house is connected to the NBN you've probably received dozens of pamphlets in your letterbox advertising internet deals from companies you’ve never heard of before. Even after you've connected, the pamphlets keep coming!

The internet industry see the NBN as a once in a lifetime land grab for new customers. Everyone around the country needs to switch to the new technology, so there is no better time to get your attention and promise you big savings.

The thing is, many of us have been with the same internet service provider for a long time. As many as 40-percent of Aussie homes are connected to Telstra, while Optus and the TPG group have about 20-percent market share each. Most of us are happy with our provider, thank you very much.

But this doesn't mean that you shouldn't shop around for a better deal, even if it is with the names you know.

We've heard lots of stories where the big name providers simply send out a new NBN modem and switch customers over to an NBN service, without having a conversation about the new plans available.

So let's take a look at the best plans from the big internet providers. If you see a deal better than the one you're currently on, you make sure you have them switch you over.

Telstra

Thanks to big pressure from the small telcos, Telstra NBN internet prices are now quite reasonable, if you can do with the bells and whistles, like Foxtel. Many will find that you can get away with paying as little as $70 per month, depending on how often you use the internet.

Optus

Optus NBN plans are fantastically simple to compare. There are basically three options to consider, starting from $60 per month. The basic plan comes with the basic NBN speed, unlimited internet data and a home phone service that you pay for as you use it.

If you step up to the next price bracket, you get a step up in internet speed and a Fetch TV set-top box with a premium channel pack and Optus Sport bundled in. The final price bump takes your internet speed up to the maximum 100Mbps.

TPG

TPG has long been known for two things: great prices and international phone calls. With its NBN plans, TPG adds these two benefits together.

As you compare the plans along the pricing tiers you'll notice that much stays the same, but the home phone calling inclusions ramp up. You can choose 'pay as you go' for these calls, or pay more upfront and have calls included in your package; including calls to overseas countries.

iiNet

Renowned for its excellent customer service, iiNet is a favourite for internet in homes across Australia. Its NBN plans can be cheap and cheerful, but can also include Fetch TV and entertainment options. The plans above offer just a basic NBN speed, but you can choose faster option if you like.

As you can see, even if you want to stay with your current provider, there are plenty of great deals to sift through. And this is just the tip if the iceberg. If you'd like to dig a little deeper, try running your own address search on our broadband plans comparison tool.

I am looking for an inclusive plan...Internet, and Landline phone calls, without international calls, but including Landline rental and local and mobile calls. I cannot find any quotes for this...am I looking in vain?

Thanks for this very good summary of the NBN. I have no idea when it will be coming to me, but I now have a good understanding with this excellent article.

It appears that at the moment there are three companies that have very good NBN Plans, also with very good support they are MUNGI, TELECUBE and LEAPTEL, they are reasonably small companies at the moment, but if they can keep up their standard of Aussie support, they will go a long way.

for those people who only use the phone occasionally, I would suggest Aldi. Cost $35 for a whole year.if you use up your $35 you can renew . My wife uses her phone only on occasions and still has $30 left. This is a one only cost, good for those people who only need to make a few calls, should be ok for young school kids too.

Pensioners wanting phone service only can get mobile plans for $10 a month unlimited from several companies including Amaysim, how cheap is that,

I do not want more than 20gbts data - I rarely use it . But I do use my e.mail, phone for chatting and mobile for text. Therefor when NBN comes our way I would rather stay on the plan I have. Phone, mobile and internet which as a senior works out at about $70.00 per month no matter how many or where I make the calls to.

I followed the link and when I was transferred to the Optus website for the $60 plan, this is what it said: $60 per month Min. total cost over 24 months is $1440 including $0 upfront costs. OFFER NOT AVAILABLE

There are some great plans there but how about the pensioners what is on offer for them. Arthur

Many elderly have risen at NBN protest meetings to declare "we don't have a computer, we don't want a computer all we want is a phone to ring the grandkids." The cost of NBN/Service provider plans as list above are terrifying the elderly. Please do a new list showing "phone only" plans. I think Telstra has one for $22 per month with customer paying for calls, another for $27.95 with $15 dollars worth of free calls. Cmmon NBN and service providers let's have some honesty for the oldies.

Try a mobile phone unlimited calls for only $10 a month, Amaysim is obly one company who offers this plan, so a pensioner can save quite a lot of money by using an unlimited $10 a month plan.. buy a sim and offf you go, chep as....

Have a look at southernphone.com.au. $10 a month mobile phone plan with your own mobile phone or $15 a month including a phone. Or buy the phone outright for $89
