5 Steps to a Cheaper Energy Bill

Energy is the kryptonite to many of our wallets. Unless you are lucky enough to be living off the energy grid, then you are paying for energy regardless if you use one kilowatt-hours or 5 million kilowatt-hours.

At FiftyUp Club we often get asked “how do we know if we are getting the best deal?”

Here are 5 steps to a cheaper energy bill.

1. Grab Your Latest Energy Bill – this piece of paper is vital to lowering your energy bill. Without it, you’re flying blind and making assumptions and we all know how the old adage goes about assuming.

2. Examine Your Charges – look at these 2 key items: the supply and the usage charges. This will allow you to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges. Sometimes there is more than one rate for your usage - there could be tiers or ‘off-peak’ or ‘controlled load’ rates overnight. You can investigate all these if you want to, but if you just start by looking at the main usage rate, that will likely cover most of what you use.

3. Discounting – do you currently get a discount on the supply charge, the usage charge, or both? Some of us are getting no discount at all, while others get over 20% off! So this can be a big money-saver if you pay on time.

4. Compare – compare your current bill against the current FiftyUp Club offer to see if you are truly getting a good deal with your provider. If not, well...

5. Switching – If the offer for FiftyUp Club members makes you happy, switch now.

Your energy doesn’t have to be expensive but it’s up to you to choose a plan. Providers aren’t going to take action for you, you’ve got to do it yourself.

It’s also important to understand what you’re paying for. To understand the terms most energy providers use, read “Understanding Your Energy Bill”.

Energy plan was up for renewal. They offered me the same deal as I currently had, being 16% discount. I mentioned the 50 up club had told of a discount of 23% and asked why as long term loyal customers that are in credit with them at all times, we weren't being offered that at the least. They changed and we are now getting 23% discount. Thanks 50 up.

Unfortunately, when you live in Queensland, other than the South East corner, there is no choice to switch Energy companies. There is Ergon, a Queensland Government owned company, that is the only one we have, the choice is use it, or, go with out power. Why are we discriminated against. Do they want us all to move into the South East corner of the State?? It is time that Fifty Up, got stuck into our State Government.

I continually check the different Electricity Retailers and your advice is so right. It is important to check supply and usage charges and don't be taken in by big discounts until you do.

Went back to my current supplier with my new offer and they matched it and also gave me $100 off my next bill so I would stay with them. Win-win all round.
