5 Ways to Kill Fruit Flies

Being healthy requires a healthy balance of fruit and vegetables and the one side effect of being healthy is the pesky fruit fly.

So what’s the easiest way to get rid of fruit flies?

Here are 5 Ways to Kill Fruit Flies

1. Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar
Today’s Creative Life suggests creating a homemade trap with ACV and plastic wrap. Add a little bit of ACV into a glass, cover with plastic wrap, poke holes into wrap so fruit flies can enter. Once inside, they can’t get out

2. Apple Cider Vinegar and Dish Soap
This is a favourite from Shelia, FiftyUp Club Editor. A method she swears by. Add 3 to 4 drops of dish soap to a bowl of vinegar.

3. Paper Cone and Fruit
In a jar, place a chunk of very ripe fruit and a little vinegar. Roll a piece of paper into a cone and place in jar. The fruit flies will crawl in but won’t be able to escape.

4. Milk, Sugar, and Pepper
This comes from an Old Farmer’s Almanac. Combine a pint of milk (.57 litre) , 4 ounces (113g) of raw sugar and 2 ounces ground pepper (57g) in a saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into a shallow dish and the flies will be drawn to the mixture and quickly drown.

5. Red Wine
Fruit flies also love the smell of wine like they love the smell of vinegar. After you’ve finished your favourite bottle, try leaving out an open bottle with a little liquid in the bottle. The skinny neck will keep the flies trapped.
