Why I Took Out Travel Insurance

Being on the FiftyUp Club Team, I get to see first hand how passionate members are and how the discounts and offers we give you help you in your day-to-day lives.

So you’d think I’d know better than to travel without Travel Insurance, right?

Well, now I do. This is my story on why I took up Travel Insurance for my NEXT holiday.

Recently, I went to New Zealand for a quick holiday. I had considered travel insurance, but at the last minute, decided against it. My main reasoning was, I’ll only be travelling for 6 days. I won’t need it. I packed my bags and set off. While the trip was amazing and the beauty of New Zealand was breathtaking, on the day I was set to fly back, my flight was delayed and ultimately cancelled.

It was at that very moment, I thought, "I should have taken out Travel Insurance."

I hustled to the customer service desk of the airline and found a different flight that would eventually get me home, a day later than I needed to be. For the first time, I had experienced what could actually go wrong when travelling - a trip delay and flight cancellation.

Other things that could go wrong when travelling:

And the list goes on.

I’ve got another quick holiday planned in a few months and I’ve already purchased my Travel Insurance for it and you can guarantee I’ll never travel again without.

It took me about 15 minutes from start to end to get my Travel Insurance and that includes reading the PDS and making sure I was covered for anything I thought could happen. Whether I actually use it or not, when my next journey happens, I will have the peace of mind knowing that if something happens, I’m covered.

I always take out travel insurance. However the FiftyUp Travel Insurance Company would not cover me because I was about to turn 90.

I too use travel insurance thru my credit card platinum insurance. So far it appears to be just as good as separate insurance Companies

Which is why I pay for my trips with my credit card as it provides me with free travel insurance. And yes, I have read the entire product disclosure document and compared it to policies that can be purchased separately. It comes up to scratch in the comparison.

And another thing, if the airline cancels the flight, it will put you on the next available flight. Or, if in my case a few years ago, a flight from Frankfurt, Germany was delayed by 7 hours, which meant my connections from Singapore to Sydney and from Sydney to Canberra were obviously missed. The airline arranged flights from Singapore to Australia, but my flight from Sydney to Canberra was a separate booking. When I told my dilemma to the friendly guy at the Qantas desk, he put me on the next available flight to Canberra for no charge. I had to sit around for a few hours.
