Why the Over-50s Should Demand Cheaper Insurance

It’s the graph some car insurers don’t want you to see.
The diagram above clearly shows who are the safest drivers on the road – FiftyUps.
Drivers in their 50s, 60s and 70s have fewer accidents, according to a report from the Older Driver Safety Advisory Committee‘s Report to the Queensland Department of Transport, in December 2011.
So why are they being asked to drive less in some states such as Victoria, and why aren’t they all paying less for their car insurance?
As FiftyUp Club CEO and former NRMA Insurance boss David Issa puts it:
“We’re the safest drivers, we follow the road rules, we’re careful with our cars, and we tend to drive less … But unfortunately our loyalty doesn’t get rewarded by most car insurance companies.”
Quite the opposite: most insurance companies use the premiums of over-50s to cross-subsidise more reckless, younger drivers.
That’s why FiftyUp Club members and other drivers over 50 should demand more from their car insurer.
Remember: You need to be prepared to move or you could be taken advantage of. You don’t generally need to wait for your car insurance renewal to arrive before you switch, so if you’re getting a raw deal, vote with your feet – or your wheels.
Make sure you get a reward for being statistically one of the safest drivers on the road.

On receiving my last insurance renewal I noticed that I had been quoted for the top of the line model with all the electrics and leather seats etc. I informed my insurance by phone that I had the basic model expecting a drop in the premium but was informed I would have to pay more. This was because my model had more accidents. I said but there are more of this class on the road and therefore more people paying. Answer "that's the rules" I then asked if I purchased a limited addition car would I have a extremely low quote. I then received a angry retort of" I am only reading from the book supplied by the company" A legal con job??

Corporate greed dominates. I also suggest that the Green Slip for personal injury be reduced for the same reasons - better driving records and less travel on the roads, which means less risk. George, NSW

Like everything else this is the of just another rip-off by the big corporations. It seems everything in this country is about filling the pockets of the cartels and to hell with the consumers. And it will a long day in hell if you expect the government to act on consumers behalf. They are bedfellows of the corporate shysters. Fifty Plus should no find an insurance company prepared to insure the over fifties at a reasonable premium.

If the over 50's have less accidents we absolutely should pay less for our insurance. The over 50's consumer is abused again.

Go figure this. car rego renewal for utility. dearer than a sedan. Insurance for 3rd party compulsory is dearer than for a sedan with 2 less occupants possible in the car. Vehicle used for shopping trips, dump runs and social commitments. At 69 I am paying the same as an 18 year old hoon for his compulsory insurance yet in all my years driving ( started out west at 11 years old ) I have had only 3 accidents which resulted in cosmetic damage to the vehicle. Go figure as to why older drivers are treated the same as the young

I am in my 80's and have been involved in three collisions. Two were when parked and the third a lady ran into the back of me recently. When driving my eyes are constantly on the three rear vision mirrors and I always leave two car lengths between me and the car in front.

We have been insured our car comprehensive insurance with APIA for a few years and one car is up for renewal, so we went on the Allianz website for a quote and with a better cover e.g. select our preferred repairer and the end result was over $300.00 plus cheaper than my current insurer APIA. That proves it's worth to shop around. MH

I agree but I can't agree with Coles who will quote a figure which is high & then only reduce it to compete by a few dollars after you provide proof of a lower price from your regular insurer.
