Why the Over-50s Should Demand Cheaper Insurance

It’s the graph some car insurers don’t want you to see.
The diagram above clearly shows who are the safest drivers on the road – FiftyUps.
Drivers in their 50s, 60s and 70s have fewer accidents, according to a report from the Older Driver Safety Advisory Committee‘s Report to the Queensland Department of Transport, in December 2011.
So why are they being asked to drive less in some states such as Victoria, and why aren’t they all paying less for their car insurance?
As FiftyUp Club CEO and former NRMA Insurance boss David Issa puts it:
“We’re the safest drivers, we follow the road rules, we’re careful with our cars, and we tend to drive less … But unfortunately our loyalty doesn’t get rewarded by most car insurance companies.”
Quite the opposite: most insurance companies use the premiums of over-50s to cross-subsidise more reckless, younger drivers.
That’s why FiftyUp Club members and other drivers over 50 should demand more from their car insurer.
Remember: You need to be prepared to move or you could be taken advantage of. You don’t generally need to wait for your car insurance renewal to arrive before you switch, so if you’re getting a raw deal, vote with your feet – or your wheels.
Make sure you get a reward for being statistically one of the safest drivers on the road.

Never mind insurance..Why don't Qld Transport,RTA,Vic Roads etc give us decently cheaper rates for registration, licences etc for being better drivers instead of talking about taking our driving privileges from us ?????

My quote through Coles for house building and contents insurance was approx 80% more expensive than my current insurer. In addition the overseas call centre operator had poor customer skills and did not know the product on offer.

I suffered the same incompetent response from Coles insurance when I sought a quote from them. Same south African doing the quote and I was astounded when the quote finally came through. Nearly 6 times the current insurance premium and when I asked why I was told because I lived near a river. Yes that is right. The city storage dam is one kilometre from may place and this area hasn't flooded in 100 years . I guess the premium is set on post codes and if they don't wish to insure north of Melbourne ( westfarmers insurance headquarters selling through Coles ) then a polite no thanks would suffice instead of then hoping I was stupid enough to buy their premium. Go figure for seeking new business

Danny and Christopher (Qld). You are correct and they called me from SOUTH AFRICA on a NSW number!!! Robert (NSW) - it doesn't give me much confidence in the FiftyUpClub either

Yes I agree whole heartedly that is why I changed my car insurance to Coles and wow was it a lot cheaper and AAMI did not refund the full 6 months that they did not insure my car - full of many excuses which is typically of the big insurance companies! Emily

Has anyone found a good deal fot compulsory third party insurance???

Adrienne

Agreed. Insurance Companies are simply greedy. Mind you, the media does not help. If a person over 55 does have an accident it is splashed all over as elderly driver runs amok crashing into stores etc., etc..... Leonce of Queensland has a point too. Travel Insurance if you are 70 or over is a prohibitive thing. We are less likely to do something silly, but we are going to be penalised no matter what.

Check with medibank private for travel insurance for over 70's. I think their "cut off" age is higher than most & members get 10%discount

Never just pay your 'renewal' notice without questioning the amount. Insurance companies dont reward loyalty anymore - only offer the best deal to new customers - then charge through the roof when you renew (hoping the customer can't be bothered shopping around again). If you don't get at least a 10% reduction off your renewal tell them you will take your business elsewhere. (But we shouldnt have to query the bill each time!!!)
