Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

what's this new Government ploy to confiscate money left in bank accounts for more than 3 years where there has been little activity on that account for that period. I thought that would be theft !!!!!! Tampering with customers bank accounts ! I may wish to go overseas for more than 3 years to work but I am damned certain if anyone touches my unused bank deposit balance there will be hell to pay !

Well it was the previous government that introduced this change so you should get your facts right before you comment. And you will be able to obtain your money whenever you need to as it has not been confiscated for ever....

I am self employed, married to a shift worker had our children late in life so I am 52 with early teen age kids. We don't receive any government benefits for anything and have been fortunate to own our home but have 2 investment properties that we hope will help our kids in the future. I have just had one of the bank insurance companies dump half of my home insurance because I run my allied health practice from a building at the rear of my home. I have paid high premiums for the past 15 years with this bank with the understanding that I was covered for property , contents and public liability as they gave us loan money to for pay for renovations to assist in refurbishment of the building to build for the business. I noticed on the renewal this year that there were a few mistakes in building age , dates etc so I rang and spoke to a phone rep. Found out that that paying $1900 per year my business had no coverage for public liability nor would they even cover the building or contents. I am not happy but wherever I turn to try and take out new insurance as soon as you input home based business they reject the request. I have been in practice for 32 years and have only had 1 claim for a break and enter, cost $500 claim to insurance. I have 2 dogs and security to protect the workplace so I don't feel I am a high risk, yet can't get a fair go from insurance companies online. If I could combine home , 2 cars 1 home and 2 investment properties I would like to do a deal but only if fair and history taken into consideration.

Hi there Maryann, thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback! The FiftyUp Club will endeavour to negotiate beneficial offer in areas such as insurance etc using the people power generated by the campaign. The FiftyUp Club is an ongoing thing as well, so if the first offer does not benefit you specifically (or is not exactly what you were hoping for) there will be ongoing offers being produced. I do hope that the club produces offers that will directly benefit you Maryann, and given the people power we've already got, I'm sure it will!

I've joined this club because it would be nice to receive some discounts from time to time but I already feel very blessed that I have a roof over my head, food to eat and a comfortable bed to sleep in, that is more than I can say for millions around the world, that will be starving tonight. Instead of everyone complaining about wanting more and more handouts from governments etc… it appears that some of you writing don’t seem to need the extra dollars and cents to add to your hefty super and share portfolios and investment properties, so be contented with what you have and count your blessings.

We have four somewhat grown-up children, two of whom are married with kids, the other two live @ home with us. We encouraged all our kids to invest in property, which they did, thankfully. Because they were able to purchase better property collectively we encouraged them to purchase investment properties before they acquired their own homes. This worked out pretty well until they wanted to borrow for their own homes. Whilst they had built up collateral they found it difficult to pay their own mortgages as well as continue to pay for the investment properties. So guess who now pays their respective shares of the investment properties? We're still working so we can afford to, and we certainly don't mind helping our kids get on their feet. Down the track we'll be OK, once we consolidate and sell off the investments plus our own family home. For now we'd like to see some form of tangible discounts for "oldies" like us that have mortgage repayments, and especially on utilities and insurance premiums that we all still have to pay. Medical insurance is also a huge bugbear these days.

I would like to see manufactures of credit cards, Loyalty cards etc slice a few degrees off the sides of the card near the bottom corners and make them tapered (not 90 degrees) which will make it easier to slide them into my wallet.

Many retirees would be interested in working from home for two or three hours per day surely an employer could utilise this work force

Without our help our daughter would never have got into the housing market, she was single, working full time but no hope go getting into housing market,we went halves on her first purchase (which she has since sold) and we did get our money back, but we went back into debt for 4 years so she could do it. She has since married and had 2 children and has gone back to work part time and I now fill in the baby siting duties for when their shifts clash. Children of today could not afford to have a family and a home without their parents contribution (not that we mind). We don't get paid for child mind etc but how else can they get on their feet if we are not there for them

Someone

have them make lots of sacrifices so that they can like anyone else would have to do. Its a learning curve and let them know its NOT all about them.

Hi Barbara, it's lovely to hear that you have looked after your children so well. I do hope that the FiftyUp Club will produce offers that benefit you!

I'm sorry Max but we don't need any more Govt. handouts. We will be paying off the Rudd Government handouts, and so will our children, for years to come. Although you do make a relevant point about the illegal immigrants.

A question - I am coming up in February 14 for the 5 year Pension Bonus Scheme. I have had Centrelink certify my hours each of the last four years as suggested in their initial correspondence. If anyone has gone through this can you please give me any info as best way to go through the final steps and how long it takes

Ron
Ron from NSW replied to ROSANNE:

Hi Roseanne. Still going through something similar. Seems that registration and annual hours endorsement don't necessarily mean eligibility as you might think. If yours is straightforward though, payment wont take long once you get through the complex paperwork associated with pension application and PBS application. There are appeals processes, but they are long and frustrating (can take 12 months or more). Ron NSW

I would like to see our children given a hand out by the govenment to get them started owning their own home. We give illegal immigrants a whole lot of dosh and ignore the plight of the people who are born here. We are crazy no wonder foreigners want to come and live here.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Max:

why Max, you have already had lots of Government handouts throughout the life of the kids. Why didn't you put those handouts to better use in the form of savings for the future house instead of spending it on them and yourselves.

David - if it was me responding to Anonymous from NarkSW I would have been using much stronger language than you did; but we get your drift about being constructive and positive - the balance of your response was very confusing though - maybe Max's edit facility could have been used!!!
