Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

better discounts for all retirees...

Both of my children would never have been able to get started with their home loans without me giving them the money to make up a sufficient deposit. If they can afford it I imagine that any parent would feel the same obligation The problem, especially in Sydney, is that property prices at the lower end of the market are being artificially inflated by the negative gearing that's given to investors. The sooner that the tax system is adjusted to reduce the amount that this enables investors to offset against their costs the better for the younger generation. It's just occurred to me while writing this that this tax offset to investors is really funded by every other tax payer, including the youngsters that are being kept out of housing ownership.

Part of the problem is the 'on line bidders' at auctions who bump the price up until it is beyond the ability of the person who has actually turned up at the auction to bid. I suspect it is a rort. How do we know if there is even someone on the other end of the telephone.Telephone bidding should be outlawed as all it does is gazump the genuine bidder.

Bigger and better discounts on all bills for all retirees that are struggling.

I say, make all the families with the kids who are using up all the resources pay higher prices for the delivery of power and water and the retirees pay less. Why does it cost 90% of your water bill to maintain the infrastructure when it is made of cement, anyway, hello !

about 7 years ago my husband & I went guarantor for our son & daughter-in-law to purchase their home. we had a mortgage on an investment property at the time & our mortgage broker arranged it all under one "umbrella" . All went well until they had enough equity to refinance themselves but the "umbrella" had to be dismantled & we also had to refinance. At the time my husband wasn't working, i still work full time but the bank didn't think we could afford our investment mortgage (we have NEVER missed a payment) we had to lie & say we would be moving in with them & renting out our own home before they would refinance us. I really felt discrimination due to our age.

My wife and I have just gone guarantors for our 25yr old daughter and partner to purchase their first property in Sydney Metro. Without doing this they would not have been able to secure a home loan for the purchase. They will meet all the repayments so this does not impact on our existing pension income unless something untoward occurs and for some reason that could not meet the agreed repayments. We consider this a satisfactory arrangement and are happy to help them out. Realistically we have enough equity in our home to allow us to do this!

Suggest you focus on employment for Over-50s. Unemployed Over-50s don't spend anything anyway.

Someone

and let's say FAIR unbiased employment for over 50s who have all the experience from being years in the workforce.

Home and Contents Insurance is a big issue. There are no significant rewards for no claims. If insurance loyalty was rewarded in a better way, we would not have to switch our Insurance Companies so often.

I agree with Antonius, when my husband died, i lost the commonwealth senior card as the income was then all mine, we were borderline before that. We should all be entitled to the senior card, as the rates, electricity, water, gas, house maintenance etc. have all gone up & it's not divided by two, the expenses are all mine.
