Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

You wonder why electricity prices keep going up ? One of the reasons is obviously greed on behalf of the companies, a recent example, where people power won, was the "Manning Alliance - see this article http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2013/08/australian-story-august-5.html, or just Google it. It was an "Australia Story" piece and was very eye opening. Basically the companies over capitalised and passed the cost onto the user. Maybe the FiftyUp Club could take this into account when brokering deals with these companies - check their ethics as well as their prices.

You're certainly not the only one out there helping out your family with day care Sam. It's great to see so many FiftyUps assisting their families. Good on you.

I"m now retired but my husband is still working so we are trying to save where we can & so yesterday, when Coles Insurance rang us, we joined with a saving of $154 a year on our car. This morning I read your chat forum & found only negative comments about Coles service when clients tried to make a claim. Our current provider has always given us excellent & prompt service so is there anyone out there who can say the same about Coles Car Insurance or do we take advantage of the 30 day cooling off period & cancel?

I missed the current deal because I have been with Coles Insurance for over 12 months. I made a claim (another driver hit my vehicle) within one month of switching. The claim was handled very professionally & I can't speak more highly of them.

With regard to Grandies looking after their grandkids, all we charge is love. Professional childcare these days is so expensive because they are attempting to 'tutor' them to primary school level BEFORE they start school. All our beautiful little kids need is

I received a phone call yesterday wanting to sell me car and contents insurance offered through the FiftyUp Club. I do not want to be canvassed by phone, particularly during a busy working day. Besides, I don't have a car.

I have just taken up the electricity offer from Click energy. What a great deal , I went for the 15% discount as I like to pay when I know I have the money to do so not when they want to take it.I was just about to stay a further two years with AGL who were only going to give me a 7% discount (big of them)after being loyal to them for years. This has come just in time MANY THANKS TO 50 UP CLUB.Only took a couple of minutes on line hassle free so far.

the price of power was put up because the LABour gov wanted to sell the power industry,it had to make it attractive to a buyer. So us succers have to wear the costs.
