Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Discounts for loyalty. Been with NRMA for 40 years yet still have to query insurance costs. I would like businesses to understand the over fifties are their stable & reliable staff, for some reason we are seen as threatening because of our knowledge and experience.

Considering all the expensive utilities, Health Insurance bodies, banks and telcos, etc how about a loyalty factor ever being put into our billing as well? Or perhaps it might be an idea to swap around like all the younger ones do.

Hi Anita, services and businesses that reward loyalty would be ideal. However it does pay to shop around.

I saved $1000, yes $1000, when I switched car insurance to Ken Tame Insurance. To be insured with Ken Tame (underwritten by Alliance) you need to be a member of the CMCA and own a camper van or motorhome (caravans not included). It cost $44 per year but you get many savings and an excellent monthly magazine. Their Customer Service and prompt payment of claims is excellent.

Yes I was with Ken Tame Insurance and as far as I was concerned they were and still are the best .

Better deals and service for the over 50s. To save money on groceries do your shopping a day later every week. eg Tuesday this week, Wednesday next week, etc. Every 7 weeks you save a week's grocery costs.

Hi Allen, thanks for your suggestion. Sharing ideas is a great way to help your fellow FiftyUps.

I agree with Ted, it's no good just getting a discount, we need to get good service, reliability and value for money, not just a cheap quote.I may be paying more with my current car insurance company but at least I know I'll get good, prompt service from them when I need them, plus I receive a 60% no claim bonus. The "Big Two" supermarket chains get enough of our money now, as it is!

We should be able to retire at 60. Bring the 70 reward back in and some may choose to keep working.

I looked at the insurance and after adding in all the things I have with my policy there is no saving for me

Ted from NSW I would like to comment on the car insurance deal from Coles. I have both my own and my wifes car insured with Coles. I had a small bingle in my Corolla in mid August, caused by another driver. I supplied all the necessary information including photos etc. however the only contact i ever receive is when i ring to see what is going on. The service is terrible and my car has still not been repaired, 4 mths after the event. After my last self initiated contact 4 weeks ago i have heard nothing. The test of a good company is the service you receive when you make a claim, and in this case the service is non existent. I guess it is the case you get what you pay for. I think the 50 up Club should do some homework on the quality of the deals they advertise rather than focus on the savings. Regards.

We are insured with NRMA and recently had an accident, which wasn't our fault. From our first phone call, we've had excellent service from them and their repairers. We've also taken our car in to one of their service stations and received the same treatment. We highly recommend the NRMA for their customer service.

DO NOT RAISE THE RETIREMENT AGE!!! Make this generation "work"instead of having so much leisure time. They can't live without FACEBOOK! They demand everything now and most get it. Wake up parents/government. I now say "Thank God for Immigration"The average Australian is now an uneducated, druggie. Gee this sounds harsh and I am only 60!!

Agree to a degree, especially with some youth. But I think we should negotiate retirement at 70 IE: if you want to retire at 60 you get current pension rate. if 65 you get and extra Say 150 dollars If you retire at 70 and extra 300 dollars. This still makes a saving but also allows for people to make a lifestyle choice if they have not had the opportunity to prepare.
