Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

John from NSW commented: I am with Coles since April 13, I switched after 40 years with NRMA, saved heaps and easy payments each fortnight. However Coles do not have Green Slips on there scope. I rang them yesterday to ask if they are considering it. Their Financial section will contact me sometime soon to discuss. My point was that insurers only give Green Slip discounts if you have their comprehensive insurance. My thoughts were that some Coles customers may go back to original insurers to receive the discount.

Most of us in this age bracket own our home and need to pau household insurance. the prices on this are so high, so I would like to see discounts for those who have had homes for a number of years especially for the older folk who have little money these days yet have to fork out thousands of $$$$ to live in the home they have enjoyed for several years. Will home insurance be something that will be offered in the FiftyUp Club or has it already commenced and I am a little bhind the times?

I really am not interested in the car insurance offer from Coles which again, gives no credit to longterm, safe, responsible drivers with no claims. The small print states that 'Savings apply for the first year of the policy'. What about the subsequent years? What is the true picture? I find this provocative & insulting especially within the the premises/promises of the FiftyUp Club. Coles should not even be permitted to make such a restrictive/limited offer on this site. It appears to be just a superficial gimmick to treat us in this 'seniors' club as gullible elderly fools to be taken advantage of. Where is the genuine respectable offer, Coles? Who is actually 'vetting' this site? Am I being unreasonable?

I'm 56 and fit and smarter than I've ever been but do you think I can even get an interview with most companies?

I'm a relief teach in the ACT and the government here employs teachers on the cheap choosing to employ first year out or student teachers. There is no consideration for experience it is all down to costs. There needs to be a balance between new teachers and older experienced teachers. If the government wishes to reduce pension costs and keep older people employed contributing to the tax system.

More 'genuine' discounts for our age group. In your negotiations with 'products' you can also add that many of us have teenage/young adults that we either buy for or we recommend these products to. That gives us even more 'buying power'. I have seen many "SENIOR" discounts in the past, APIA for one, 'offering discounts to only the over 50s and their insurance premiums are between $600-$1200 higher than my current coverage. This has been over the last 5years. I won't even consider them ever again when I checked out their home insurance. As you state that we have a voice with our numbers, then as Jean Luc Pickard would say, 'Make it so'!

Chris from Tasmania, with all due respect to you, Tasmania is definitely not the forgotten state, I am a West Aussie, suggest anyone not living here in W A, give it a go, a slab of beer in the Pilbara costs $ 90.00, a camp site at local caravan park in Pilbara costs $ 1000.00 a week, to get to the Pilbara driving a diesel, the fuel will set you back $ 2.20 a litre. you can not live in the Pilbara without commercial industrial standard air conditioning, running 24 hours a day, you do the sums on electricity consumption cost. you can fly to Bali from Perth for $ 400, that's some 3000 k's distance, yet to fly to Karatha from Perth some 1800 k's it costs $ 860, if you have family working in the Pilbara including grand children, very sadly you don't get to give them a hug very often, trust me !!!! I am a victim of all these facts.

I have not seen any offers from or for the forgotten state TASMANIA !!!! we are paying the HIGHEST PRICES FOR EVERYTHING in this state it is ridiculous only this week I paid...... $1.79.09 per litre for a tank of 98 ulp fuel....,my car took 64 litres which cost me $114.60 ..... I know this is another country but .....normal unleaded fuel in thailand is about $1.10 aud, thats because the Thai Government subsidises the fuel there. The fuel taxes the tasmanian and federal governments collect DOES NOT GET SPENT on roads and infrastructure.....in Tassie at least anyway,we have the most under developed roads in the country,

I totally agree with Bob of NSW...... well said mate !!! I think what Fiftyup club needs ?.... is many more members so companies, utilities, providers, financiers, retailers, etc will sit up and take notice of potentially how many cashed up over fifties are really out there wanting to spend some money whilst getting a good fair deal and excellent value for money .....as most of us would be aware we are paying through the nose for products in this country compared to the US and britian and even New Zealand.
