Good news for regional motorists and grey nomads

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 12.01.52 PMGood news today – especially for regional members and grey nomads –  as the consumer watchdog gets new powers to monitor petrol prices and hunt for price gouging.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will now issue quarterly reports on petrol prices, and conduct in-depth investigations into problem areas.

Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Bruce Billson told the ABC today the ACCC would conduct about four “deep dive” investigations into fuel markets that are a concern due to unexplained high prices.

He named the Shoalhaven in NSW, the Northern Territory and some parts of Melbourne’s west as target areas.

“It’s a closer examination of pricing and margins, of supply impacts, of even the state of competition in particular markets,” he said.

“We’ve seen even in capital cities as the price of oil’s come down, the price at the bowser has come down more quickly in some capital cities than others.”

This is especially good news for regional areas, where a lack of competition often means the capital city price cycle doesn’t exist. Regions are also missing out on the ACCC’s new daily advice website on when is the best time to buy petrol.

(By the way, if you live in any of the capital cities, the ACCC’s analysts are saying NOW is the time to buy, with average ULP prices uniformly below $1.30 today).

Its about Time The Toothless Tiger - ACCC - Got Off Its Rear And Done WHAT THEY ARE PAID TO DO - My Local Member Says It Is NOT Price Gouging When The Grubs Put The Price Up 20 Cents Per Litre - In THEIR Cycle - Then Down - BUT It Goes Up Overnight - BUT It Takes About A Week To SLOWLY Go Back Down Ken From Mount Warren Park Qld.

I wouldn't be holding my breath. The ACCC is only interested in pursuing businesses that offer discounts with the excuse that discounts are anti-competitive. Figure that one out!

When petrol comes down, there is not the same drop for diesel fuel. Why is that?

It is amazing that petrol prices are always so low in Sydney and that prices do go down with the drop in the price of crude oil. Canberra very rarely see a drop in the price of petrol and never to the amazing lows that Sydney enjoys. Canberra prices are never compared - let alone mentioned - on TV news or currant affair programs. This not only goes for petrol but for many other commodities such as house prices, grocery prices etc.

In Bathurst we are paying 142.90 per litre which is a great example of regional Australia subsiding Sydney motorists. The price should be uniform right around Australia

With the price of oi the bowser price should be under $1.00. I have been watching the bowser prices and comparing the price of the indepenents vs the two big ones, Shell and Caltex. The independents price has been anything up to 12 cents lower. Lower even tking into account the 4c discount coupon. Good to see those two getting some competition. Makes me wonder how the two big ones can be so much higher thean the independents. As at yesterday the station I have been using in in Granville Sydney. Bowser price for E10 was $1.07. If anyone lives in that vicinity the address is 2 Blaxcell Street Granville. Westside Petroleum.
