Good news for regional motorists and grey nomads

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 12.01.52 PMGood news today – especially for regional members and grey nomads –  as the consumer watchdog gets new powers to monitor petrol prices and hunt for price gouging.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will now issue quarterly reports on petrol prices, and conduct in-depth investigations into problem areas.

Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Bruce Billson told the ABC today the ACCC would conduct about four “deep dive” investigations into fuel markets that are a concern due to unexplained high prices.

He named the Shoalhaven in NSW, the Northern Territory and some parts of Melbourne’s west as target areas.

“It’s a closer examination of pricing and margins, of supply impacts, of even the state of competition in particular markets,” he said.

“We’ve seen even in capital cities as the price of oil’s come down, the price at the bowser has come down more quickly in some capital cities than others.”

This is especially good news for regional areas, where a lack of competition often means the capital city price cycle doesn’t exist. Regions are also missing out on the ACCC’s new daily advice website on when is the best time to buy petrol.

(By the way, if you live in any of the capital cities, the ACCC’s analysts are saying NOW is the time to buy, with average ULP prices uniformly below $1.30 today).

Diesel is always dearer why it is cheaper to produce I think the price has something to do with the rebate paid to truckies that is why they are not complaining it is a ripp off

The price of diesel should always be cheaper than gasoline. When cracking a barrel of oil, the heavy ends like diesel and heating oil are processed much quicker than gas. Next out is things like kerosine and jet fuel, and then at the light ends you have your gasoline, xylene, toluene, etc.

The price of diesel falls at a much slower rate than petrol, and never falls as much as the price of petrol. I am sure this is because the media and the motoring bodies always just focus on the price of petrol. How about FiftyUp Club lobbying them to focus on the prices of both...and see what that does to the price of diesel ?? (I think most of the grey nomads use diesel in towing their caravans)

The more I read these comments the more I'm sure people outside of the city limits are being had and no one seems to care about us.

I'll believe t when I see it! We have been paying 165.9c for diesel for over 2 years in Batemans Bay - 143.9 atm in Moruya 26 kms away and 139.9c in Canberra and 129.9 at Costco in Canberra. Sick of being ripped off and I'm sure they have no intention of lowering the price over the holidays. Seems the ACCC has more investigative powers but will still be a toothless tiger in my opinion.

You should try pieces in the Shoalhaven area, they are a joke when just up the road at Albion Park they are consistently 10 to 15cpl cheaper....go figure, got me beat, but you know where we buy ours from.

I agree with Gerald- it is the same on the Central Coast. prices are much higher than in the city

Bruce Billson, and the majority of those in authority or purposing to do something, as usual have no regard for the Regional dilemma. Here at Forster price are consistently 10 20 cents over true price, as with Batemans, Tumut and Hunter regionals. More disturbing is the collusion which is allowed to persist - all Stations have the same prices to the cent. Isn't this illegal? We need a watchdog with TEETH who really cares.
