Good news for regional motorists and grey nomads

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 12.01.52 PMGood news today – especially for regional members and grey nomads –  as the consumer watchdog gets new powers to monitor petrol prices and hunt for price gouging.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will now issue quarterly reports on petrol prices, and conduct in-depth investigations into problem areas.

Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Bruce Billson told the ABC today the ACCC would conduct about four “deep dive” investigations into fuel markets that are a concern due to unexplained high prices.

He named the Shoalhaven in NSW, the Northern Territory and some parts of Melbourne’s west as target areas.

“It’s a closer examination of pricing and margins, of supply impacts, of even the state of competition in particular markets,” he said.

“We’ve seen even in capital cities as the price of oil’s come down, the price at the bowser has come down more quickly in some capital cities than others.”

This is especially good news for regional areas, where a lack of competition often means the capital city price cycle doesn’t exist. Regions are also missing out on the ACCC’s new daily advice website on when is the best time to buy petrol.

(By the way, if you live in any of the capital cities, the ACCC’s analysts are saying NOW is the time to buy, with average ULP prices uniformly below $1.30 today).

What about BOWRAL NSW where all the petrol stations in the area keep there prices up and uniformlly move the price up and down together.

How about the Central Coast, NSW? It's halfway between Sydney and Newcastle where prices are around 1.27 - 1.30 per litre, yet on the Coast the price is 1.37 - 1.45. Why?

Target areas for the ACCC should include Noosa where petrol prices never come down except for Woolworths when you count in the 4c off

I certainly hope fuel prices are investigated in ACT as they have been continuously over priced compared to most other capital cities .

We live in a little country town half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. We consistently pay much more for our petrol then the people who live in either of these cities. The ULP price today is 149.9c per litre with diesel even more expensive. Interestingly we can buy petrol at little town away from the Western Highway cheaper than we can here. When we queried this with our supplier the answer was "We are on the highway". So they are quite happy to rip of the tourists and the locals alike.

If they are going to investigate areas then they should come to the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. Fuel and diesel prices are up to 15 cents dearer here than an hour closer to Melbourne. What a rip off!

The TV stations always keep everyone very aware of the price of petrol during the news, and I am sure this makes the servos more responsive in reducing petrol prices when the oil price is going down. We need to get them to also publicise diesel prices.

i would like to know why diesel is up $0.15 per litre dearer than petrol. considering most grey nomads would be running a diesel maybe this should be closely looked at
