Power bills still hurting, amid fears they’ll go higher and lack of trust in pollies to fix them

Hardship has trumped energy efficiency as the most common way to keep power bills affordable this winter, according to the current FiftyUp Club energy poll available here

Asked to choose up to three strategies you’re using to keep bills down, 80% said turning off powerpoints and lights, and 58% are foregoing the heater, even though you’re cold.

“I'm going around my neighbourhood & looking for old wood to burn in my fireplace,” said one member in our forum.

This is compared to 39% who bought energy efficient appliances and 29% each for either buying solar panels or switching suppliers.

Just four per cent claimed they did nothing as they could afford the bills.

The findings are very timely as a legal battle begins in NSW that will have consequences for the entire country in the months to come.

The Australian Competition Tribunal is currently hearing challenges from the NSW state-owned electricity networks to proposed July 1 price cuts, and we'll be campaigning to make your voice heard in the deliberations.

Click here to take our 2-minute survey if you haven’t yet done so

The FiftyUp Club will then put together a submission for the tribunal on behalf of Australians over 50, who tend to be disproportionately impacted by higher power prices.

Very few of us seem to believe the politicians when they say power prices will go down.

Almost 70% feared electricity would rise significantly and 14% hoped for a smaller increase. Only 5% thought prices would be stable and 12% that they might even come down.

There was overwhelming support of 79% for the Australian Energy Regulator's proposal for drastic cost savings to consumers – up to a $300 a year for some households.

Almost 19% said their support  would depend on if there safeguards for workers.

Perhaps most interesting for students of consumer behaviour was much greater trust in the market and competition to contain power prices than the traditional champions of government and regulators.

Some 52% said the market looked after their interests with lower prices and better service ahead of the regulators such as the AER. Federal and state governments got scores of under 10% each.

When it comes to disconnection, a fate which befell nearly 33,000 households in NSW in 2013-14 thanks to unpaid bills, only 1% have actually been cut-off.  But we do wonder how many have had to do what this member has to pay their bills:

“Just can't afford to pay the bills. Spouse is still working at 71 and we still can't make ends meet. Have to frequently ask for extended time on electricity, phone, rates, water rates. Barely enough left for food.”

I am disgusted with the politicians who over the years have sold power and other public utilities to private enterprise. At the time I recall that we were always told that it was more econimical to do so(aint that the truth because Govt cannot run anything, even sold the lotteries!!!!!How can you not turn a profit on lotteries?????? The pollies always told us that measures would be put in place to ensure that privatisation would be regulated so that we would not be paying excessive power bills. Well guess what? The private companies always make huge profits and pay board members and shareholders handsomely. They and crooked politicians are the only ones to benefit from selling off our assets which were paid for by us poor mugs who are now getting ripped off. If prices o not go down or at the very least stabilise I would imagine that there will be a severe backlash against both major parties!

Niki
Niki from NSW replied to Gregory:

Gregory - make sure your statements are correct BEFORE writing them down. Power hasn't been sold off YET .. not to say it won't be - but voters went along with that when they returned the Coalition government in NSW. Don't blame anyone else but the voters ... we get what we vote for! My power bills have been reasonable because I don't waste. People need to be more careful.

Gregory
Gregory from NSW replied to Niki:

Niki, Please read my statement again,it is correct. I referred to the previous sale of the supply of power and other utilities to private enterprise which is when the price hikes started in earnest! The present proposal by the Baird govt is not to sell the poles it is to lease 49% of them and it remains to be seen if this will happen and whether will increase the prices. You might remember that a number of Labor premiers were in favor of selling the poles however the unions blocked it. At least the Baird govt has not sold them!

Bruce from QLD commented:

The biggest rip off for domestic electricity customer is the service or daily connection fee. This is the component that I am unable to control and it is now largest single item on my (bills). I have electricity accounts in three states. My SA and NSW accounts share a common supplier, (Momentum) they are very good in that they provide a single account across both states including solar inputs. Excellent, but the they daily fee is exorbitant! Momentum are unable to 'offer' me service in north Qld. In fact in north Qld it is a monopoly with choice of Ergon or Ergon and certainly no great deals. In Qld my solar input is just 6.5 c/kwh. Certainly making up for the over generous offers of past years. I am providing a real bargain generating service for Ergon. Could I be so bold as to suggest solar/mains be on an equal basis i.e. what I pay to buy grid power they pay to buy my solar power. AS the service fee please remove and 'increase the per kwh rate thereby allowing me to have control over my bill. Make it true user pay.

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Bruce:

Momentum is owned by Hydro Tasmania - and they're Government owned.

Niki
Niki from NSW replied to Bruce:

I agree Bruce. My daily connection fee (or supply charge as they call it) is larger than my usage and when you have BOTH electricity and gas, you pay that particular charge twice! Not fair there.

Marianne
Marianne from NSW commented:

I choose not to change from Click Energy as they pay me 10cents for my Solar feed in. Our solar panels are to ease the burden and they do. Paying them each fortnight when my pension is paid is such a relief, I actually pay everything that can be paid by Bpay this way, water rates, Council rates, telephone, electricity. The only fly in the ointment is Insurances, these I pay annually as I refuse to pay extra to pay by the month. We live in a profit orientated time and utility bills are the soft hit, we all need our power and/or gas, these will be hit with increases as wages rise etc in order to keep the profits. All a very vicious cycle really.

Alain
Alain from NSW replied to Marianne:

Only The Greens will pay you as much for what you feed the grid as what you pay when you draw from them but since you all trust only Labor or the Libs and their cousins the Nationals, what can I say...

Ken from NSW replied to Alain:

The Greens are worse economic vandals than Labor, of course they will pay a feed-in tariff equal to the peak supply charge! Hell, even more, it's only money! They can always raise taxes and get more, from people who actually WORK for a living. News update, Alain, the Qld State Govt is currently Labor! The arrogant, corrupt Newmann Govt. was turfed out.

Alain
Alain from NSW replied to Ken:

Our future but most importantly the one of your children and grand children is with The Greens: you don't want them to be abused as we are by those obnoxious pollies from Labor or worse, the Libs, do you? Let's ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR, please!

Ken
Ken from NSW replied to Alain:

Agenda21, basket weaving in cold, dank, dark caves, and most of the Green agenda is arguably worse than being ruled by totalitarian socialist Labor, or unbridled Corporate Capitalist Liberal governments. Few of the Labor or Liberal mobs could match Hyphen, Milne, Bandt, and that detestable female former NSW leader, whose name fortunately has slipped my mind, for "obnoxious". I just wish I could forget the faces.

bill from QLD commented:

power bills will continually rise regardless of who has control of the price governments both state and federal always bow and worship the energy suppliers and will advise ( order ) the regulator to increase prices as required by the suppliers Even with the carbon tax removed, the price remained the same for a short period before it again went up The saving was changed to another cost Now that the NSW government has leased of the power poles , there will be a need to rise the price of power so that the investor gets a good return for investment watch now a bill added to solar users that put power back into the grid as a rent cost to use the lines from the leasee of the system Don't believe that it will not happen as it was already proposed by the LNP on advice from the suppliers before that last state election power bills will rise and pensioners will be cut off if they cannot pay

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

NSW only leased 49% of 'power/poles! LNP is not the party in power in NSW! The regulator is a separate statutory body unrelated to Government. Cheap scare tactics Bill.

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

well it seems that the newspapers misinform everybody except those in the sate of NSW WE heard that the LNP ( liberal, national coalition) won the government at the last election Yes the regulator is a separate body but it responds to advice from the government the same as the private health regulator responds to suggestions from the government relayed from the health funds You say scare tactics well I say watch it happen but even then you will have a rational to suit your own political preference.

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

Slow down at bit Bill - Qld is the only State that has an LNP (a registered political party). The other States & at Federal level that are blessed with a Liberal Party in power, is referred in the press as a Liberal Coalition. This is substantially a different form of Government than what you have inferred - LNP.

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

sorry old chap but it doesn't matter if it is a liberal party or a national party or a LNP party , it is still the same party The only difference is that in QLD it is referred to the LNP coalition where as in other states the two parties always give their preferences to each other so that they retain power IT is a sort of each way bet as each party only needs 26% of the primary vote as the other party gives the preferences over to get it across the line How do you think they got back in as they certainly didn't get 51% of the primary vote outright

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

Sorry old chap - you missed the point re LNP again. No sleep lost thought. In NSW they do not have compulsory preferential voting, so where does leave your argument?

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

how well you evade the issue It is not compulsory voting that is the issue here but the fact that each member givers what ever preferences they have to their sister party It is compulsory within the party to give their votes to the other sister party and to support that sister party in all votes in parliament Really , have you ever known one party or even members of that party to (LP or NP)cross the floor and vote opposite with the ALP to defeat a motion or bill You must surely understand that regardless of the state or territory the LP or NP or LNP are controlled by the federal LP party and all members have the same ideology in politics

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

Libs have crossed the floor - Malcolm Turnbull comes to mind in he climate bill. PS: glad you recognise LP, NP and LNP - that's all I was differentiating between previously before you shot off at a tangent.

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

thank you for bringing me back on track The LP, NP or lNP have made it their policy to sell ( sorry lease for 99 years )off all as many public assets as possible so that that public money can be paid to private enterprise to promote infrastructure so to (create jobs) unfortunately a 99 years lease is the same as a sell off as lease holders will not maintain the utility at a standard as profit comes before anything Which brings me back to my original comment that prices will rise regardless and the leasee will introduce a cost on solar panel holders for the use of the grid as was floated in QLD when Newman (LNP) wanted to sell off the utilities but was forced to renig (backflip) on that to lease off the utilities Thankfully QLD people know that public assets should be kept in public hands as the government then controls prices

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

Who 'sold' the railways in QLD? Who 'sold' CBA? Who 'sold' the Ports in NSW, and wait, there a lot more.....

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

warren old chap -when it came to selling the railways in QLD the fact is that only the freight arm was privatised The passenger services (city and rural long distance ) is still government owned and as it now stands with the coal fields shutting down that arm is feeling the pinch. With privation came a massive 7.500 lost jobs in the rail industry The QLD voters handed the ALP a swift kick up the rear end for that sale The LNP ran amok under Newman and Queens landers sent them the message about privatisation and political stupidity The LP couldn't care less and 43% sold will result in lost jobs soon and price rises in the future IF you want to divert attention away from the rising cost of power then that is your right , but it is undeniable that the LP , The NP or the lNP coalition have no interest in average Australia ,just in keeping power and cuddling up to foreign corporate bosses.( foreign owned power companies) the other 47% will go before the next election

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to bill:

Surprisingly I don't necessarily disagree with everything you said, Bill old chap. Would have said something similar but with qualification. 7500 jobs lost - we need efficiency and obviously a lot of people were doing nothing and being paid for it.

bill
bill from QLD replied to Warren:

to talk inefficiencies you have to understand what these people were doing like building the high standard ore wagons for coal and iron ore , maintaining over 100.000 klms of rail line , maintaining the wagons and associated equipment Now there are china made wagons that have to extra money spent of modifications and up grades just to meet the regulators standards for rolling stock like employing the same number of staff as were sacked on a casual ,hire labour basis just to save on holiday pay and sick pay requirements and to destroy the union membership in that all staff have to sign individual contracts in accordance with Abbots wishes But time will show just how inefficient the new system for the power supply is when natural disasters hit the grid, electricians leave the industry and every body looses food from fridges because in the interest of efficiency people were sacked or made redundant

Ken
Ken from NSW replied to bill:

By and large, LP and NP parliamentary members will have the same interests, the Libs being (formerly) the "party for small business", and the NP being ostensibly the farmers and country persons, (the majority of whom are small business people), party. It is not unknown for them to cross the floor. There should be more of it, though. We elect parliamentarians to represent their electorate, not to represent their party. Bring on Electoral Recall!

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Ken:

If a Labor MP crosses the floor, his/her political career in the labor party ends that day. However, their Green Coalition partners continue to play havoc from within. Can't trust them at all.

You keep making good observations, then jumping to Left Groupthink conclusions, sadly. One of the things the LP and the NP did NOT agree on, except in exceptional Queensland, was amalgamation. They maintain a Coalition, because by and large they have (or perhaps more accurately, had) similar, but not identical, values,

Why is it only consumers in the South East corner of the state that access to other power companies to secure a better deal? We have no such access where i live (Bundaberg).
