Over 50s reckon Budget fair enough, but not great hopes

While the argy-bargy about how fair the Budget is (or isn’t) continues in Canberra, it’s reassuring to share some common-sense from the wisdom of the crowd that is FiftyUp Club members.

More than 3,400 of you answered our snap poll after the Budget and found overall it was both fair and unlikely to change your voting intentions.

But you were equally divided as to whether Mr Hockey’s planned expenditures and savings would actually solve any of the long-term challenges facing the country.

There were four concise multiple-choice questions on the Budget; how fair was it in your assessment, what was its impact on your lives and how likely was it to change both your vote and address Australia’s problems?

The results in summary were:

  • Only 1/3 of you say the Budget was unfair on over-50s
  • 42% say it had a negative impact on them, and
  • Nearly 2/3 say it's not a vote-changer.

We know from previous questionnaires that 48% of you are prepared to identify as coalition voters and 22% as Labor.

Some 70% describe themselves as pensioners and part pensioners – or expect to be in their retirement.

Here are the results in more detail:

Fairness: Almost half (47%) felt it was very or quite fair as opposed to 32% who believed it was very or quite unfair. The neutral measured 21%.

Impact: In terms of personal impact 42% thought it would be severely or slightly negative, 33% were neutral and just 25% a slightly or extremely positive impact.

Voting intention: 63% says the Budget was not at all or very unlikely to see them change their vote. Another 23% said it was quite or very likely to change their vote and 13% were neutral.

Long-term solutions: Split down the middle, with 42% on each side finding it equally likely or unlikely to make a difference. The neutrals were 15%.

It’s interesting many of you were prepared to mark the Budget up as being fair while at the same time acknowledging it was going to cost you something.

Perhaps you were one of the 300,000+ who stood to lose pension entitlements through the tighter eligibility requirements.

It’s taken Labor almost two weeks and detailed analysis they commissioned from NATSEM, the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling, to pronounce the Budget as ‘unfair’ for low-income families on Monday.

ACOSS, the Australian Council of Social Service, says their modelling shows the government’s decisions to hold onto most of last year’s cuts as well as bring in new ones this May would cost lower-income families and Australians some $15 billion over the next four years.

So there’s plenty more argument to come about the Budget and who does, or doesn’t, carry the can in terms of the cost of the cuts. The focus has been on families so far but expect it to return to the highly contested area of retirement incomes soon.

In the meantime we’ll make the pollies aware of what you think in surveys like this.

For starters, we’ll be on air this afternoon talking to Chris Smith about the snap poll on 2GB 873 at 1.10pm, so do tune in!

Gordon from NSW commented:

The Budget is not that helpful, but it is the Politicians that are not doing their job as they are overlooking the more important things such as the drought and it's affect upon our regional areas. Also, homelessness in another example and the looming (not just iron ore ) cutbacks in the coal mining production and current drop in wages /payments to contractors ..In this State ,spending lots on trams is of no help (especially in Newcastle where they are now doing Geo Tech drilling ) (Oh yes, we only wanted the Harbourside land for High rise to sell to overseas at inflated prices ) Not for the homeless ??

Someone from NSW replied to Gordon:

Gordon tell us something we did not know: "The Budget is not that helpful" ! Where do you reside, Gordon? This planet? Australia? What if your comment WAS an "understatement'? lol

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Gordon:

Homelessness IS a vrey important issue NOT addressed by Abbott and his incompetent team, YES, Gordon: on any given night, there are 105,000 homeless people in Australia, enough to fill the MCG. Of these people, 42% are under the age of 25. Thousands of mums and dads live, sleep every night with their kids in an old 'battered' car. That is also the "new" lucky country of the LNP voters! Coal should NOT be extracted from the earth if we had clever politicians governing us, coal IS the past since climate change has turned into the serious issue it is now, but it is a matter of replacing coal extraction by numerous possibilities, economically speaking, it will require a government which is smart, has a vision for our future... It's not going to happen tomorrow...

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

..also important, Gordon, yes, is the DROUGHT! The drought is intimately linked to CLIMATE CHANGE, but there is NOTHING on CLIMATE CHANGE in the Budget !!!...

Danny
Danny from NSW commented:

Warren, You're spot on, but as long as the Labor Party is being run by Union Stooge Bill Shorten and other lefties like Tanya Plibersek, who are still in denial about the massive debt left by 6 years of disfunctional Labor Govt of which they were part & left Abbott Govt to deal with, and the pack of half wits and attention seekers in the Senate blocking every measure Abbott and Hockey try to rectify it, our grandchildren will still be paying it off in 20 years time. Oh and Allan from NSW & Mr Anonymous are either moron's or have been living under a mushroom for the past decade if he truly believes the ABC is partial in their political reporting. Just watch Q & A or the 7.30 Report or media watch to see just how biased they are against the coalition Govt & MP's. When Labor were in Govt the ABC luvvies treated Rudd,Gillard & their cronies with kid gloves, yet they've been doing their best to slam Abbott ever since he won Govt, its not even subtle. Thankfully we have presenters on 2GB & journos from the Daily Telegraph to balance the left bias demonstrated by the ABC & Fairfax media.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Danny:

"Massive debt" is not improving with the LNP! They are in fact taking us to the abyss, we will never recover from Abbott's and his incompetent team's management of what was once a lucky country!

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Danny:

Danny, it's wonderful to meet someone with an intelligent comment at last, together with an ability to debate a point constructively.

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

The NATSEM report commissioned by Labor was disingenuous as it excluded the positive impacts of C02 legislation tax benefit, various child benefits and other factors. It’s a simple fact - Australia has a debt problem thanks to Labor/Greens. Sacrifices need to be made. We all need to wean ourselves off welfare/entitlement mentality to guarantee our children have a similar standard of living we’ve enjoyed.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

B*** S*** !!!

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

Did you hear it on GB?

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

The NATSEM report IS an absolute disgrace for this government and our nation! Want the details?

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

Tony Abbott thought he was onto something really clever when he told the Parliament the problem with the NATSEM modelling is that it doesn’t take into account second round effects. Chris Bowen didn’t miss a beat and asked whether there was a single measure in the Budget where the modelling included second round effects. Joe Hockey had to admit there wasn’t. It was yet another contradiction between the two this week

Alain
Alain from NSW commented:

Abbott's sister: "same-sex marriage will be legal by the end of the year" !

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Alain:

That is neither "coherent", nor -certainly not- "productive", for some of us. Could even remind them of Federal Parliament question time...

Peter
Peter from QLD commented:

It is disappointing to read many of the comments by FiftyUp Club Members. Much of it is unproductive and even incoherent. I reminds me a lot of Federal Parliament question time. We need to lift our game.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Peter:

Doesn't suit your political taste? Would prefer that it' be "in tune" with your little self' way of thinking?

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Peter:

Could you please, expand upon WHAT EXACTLY IS "incoherent", Peter? I'm just being curious... Thanks. Anon

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

... if anything, Peter Fifty Up Club MUST be congratulated for the freedom of speech allowed on their platform: a rare 'commodity' these days in our country!

Allan
Allan from NSW commented:

Robert, you poor fellow. Was your diatribe written by the content director at GB or are you the content director? The ABC has been found to be entirely partial, something GB will never be. This report was done by an ex commercial radio exec, Graham Mott. Why does GB always rate No.1? Because up to 20% of the listening population are exactly like you and GB is your natural home where you are told how to think and do not worry about the facts.

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Allan:

Totally untrue Alien. ABC have actually launched their own internal review on why the public perceive them as being so bias to Greens and Labor. Their ratings are going down and 2GB remain on top. 2GB provide an alternative/balanced view. ABC just feed the chooks.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

The important is to believe it

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

???????

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

"GB provide an alternative/balanced view"... IN UR DREAMS, NO? Warren?

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

Australians taxes pay for the tripe on ABC / Q&A etc, and ABC audience numbers are for ever dwindling. 2GB rely on ratings/shareholders/promotions/editorial content and as such are extremely successful in real marketing/economic terms. Your emotional argument is so weak anonymous. How do you measure success? Anyway, I was addressing Allan's comment not you.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

Every "civilized" nation has an "ABC", has a national broadcaster... Want the Brits to get rid of their "auntie", of their "BBC"???

Charles
Charles from NSW commented:

All this bickering I read in these FiftyUp comments seems to overlook the failure of politicians being prepared to set the example of financial sacrifice that their budget decisions expect of some electors in over coming Australia’s DEBT. In making decisions NOTHING SHARPENS CONCERN MORE THAN SHARING THE CONSEQUENCES OF BEING UNCONCERNED but, long public apathy has ensured that sharing the consequences of being unconcerned will not be an influencing factor for our politicians when formulating policy. This being so, greedy politicians reward themselves with outrageous retirement pensions and perks that are the very epitome of the “Entitlement Mentality” and - THE STUFF YOU JACK I’AM ALRIGHT SYNDROME – IS NOW ENDEMIC AMONG THEM Charles. NSW.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Charles:

Of course, Charles! If you look at this morning's ABS figures, you and me , but most importantly THEM know "it" is coming, the "recession" with incompetent Abbott at the helm, so guess what? As you put it yourself, they prepare themselves for what they know will be "the worst case scenario", on the back of the tax payer we are, yes, Charles! Want the proof? Hockey, while in Canberra paying rent to his wife (who invoices him!) while receiving $275 from us, the taxpayers ! "This" is what we are dealing with (or, "whom", perhaps...) Want to "look at" what I am talking about? Here it is: Business investment fell by 4.4 per cent in the March quarter, worse than economists' forecasts of a 2.4 per cent fall, official figures released on Thursday showed. )

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

...could have taken many more examples, e.g. /i.e. why did they want unemployed to wait 6 months (now "magically" changed to 4 weeks in Budget 2015...) before they could get some help from Centrelink ? "You obviously do not know how much these pollies pay themselves in salary and superannuation!" IS the answer... Do your own research and be "impressed"!...

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

* not $275 / "week", no-no-no-no-no : $275 / "NIGHT" ! The price of big cigars having gone up, we want your understanding there...

Kathleen
Kathleen from QLD commented:

It is revealing that Bill Shorten constantly ignores ALL the elephants in the room and can only show a semblance of movement on gay marriage! How inappropriate at this time and is this the way he would govern? Does he not have policies on governance? No one stops people "doing their thing" and I wish that they didn't have to call it marriage. Could we deal with the important affairs of governance for the sake of our country's prosperity and collective good.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Kathleen:

Wrong, Kathleen, there is a video of Bill Shorten arguing for marriage equality dating from one year ago.

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

Can I please ask you, Kathleen? Why do you feel it is "inappropriate at this time" to 'fill the gap' as the only English speaking country on the planet to NOT allow gay marriage? Thanks. Anon

Warren

Bill's a real dill and if Rudd had not introduced his leadership Union/Member leadership voting rules, Bill would be a dead duck by now.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

Warren, please, be kind to ur next PM.

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

He would be worst than Rudd & Gillard combined. Albo was the better choice but even he could not inspire a chook raffle. Labor has a problem with it's Leadership rules.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

As long as YOU don't have a problem with Labor...

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

We want Bill or Richard for PM, we want a modern and prosperous Australia, "the rest" have now proven that they govern for themselves and their rich friends, not for Australia, the great Nation we once were...

John
John from NSW commented:

Maybe if the correct information was relayed to people in this group they wouldn't be so happy. The statement was made that "Despite fears of cuts to the Pensioner Concession Card, which delivers much-appreciated discounts on public transport, utilities, medicines and GPs, it has also been quarantined from changes. So those who might lose access to the pension with the new assets test and still have the card will keep it." According to Treasury the following will apply "Due to these changes, those who no longer receive a pension will remain eligible for a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or Health Care Card." So which is it a Health Care Card or Pension Concession Card?

Ann
Ann from NSW commented:

Not a happy chap. When I started work 1 day after my 15th birthday, worked full time till I was 66 and have continued to teach casually, now 72, to be classed as rich with Assets of $850,000 (approx) I find the budget distasteful and unfair.

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Ann:

Aged 72 and $850,000 in the bank - what have you got to complain about?

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

He misses roughly another $850000 to be self-reliant until the age of 95...

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

He's a she and if $850,000 is all you've got, why should the Government have to cover the 'risk' of her going onto 95. Plan ahead. Families should look out for one another.

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Warren:

{Yep, a 'she', 'Ann', my sincere apologies} Want me to explain, Warren? The superannuation contribution was a CLEVER Labor initiative, but started really late in the piece (if compared with other OECD countries) and the original increases in Keating's 'design' were not followed thru... So, we get the government we deserve and those governments have no vision past the -short- three years they are in power... We are lagging behind, 'ourselves' and the rest...

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

Absolute rubbish comment on Super Guarantee (SC) NSW 'A'. Australia is, and still is a leader in this field - congrats to the ACTU/Union movement. The only problem is that Labor see this as their cash cow and continually milk it ($9B.) during their last 6 years with 12 legislative changes after Rudd infamous statement ...............I'll let you look it up!
