Power Cuts or Power Bill Cuts – Does it really come down to a choice?

Who do you believe – the energy regulator charged with putting the long-term interests of consumers first? Or the NSW ‘poles and wires’ companies which actually deliver the stuff?

That’s essentially the argument behind a high stakes legal stoush which will determine the size of planned 5-12% reductions to your next electricity bills.

And it’s especially important for older Australians who generally face higher bills. They are at home more, spend a higher proportion of their income on electricity; and are hit harder by climbing supply charges.

But those big savings promised to consumers are now under threat as the poles and wires companies and the NSW state government which owns them launch legal appeals against planned price cuts due on July 1.

So the FiftyUp Club is going to launch an appeal of its own: from today we’re asking you, the members, to send us your views on the legal battle, and tell us how higher electricity costs have impacted on your wallet and way of life.

THE FULL STORY

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has fixed a five-year pricing determination which cut the amounts the NSW state-owned poles and wires businesses could charge us by some $6 billion to 2019.

It adds up to big savings for the consumer of between $100 and $300 a year depending where you live. It is aimed to bring the costs of delivery to NSW households in line with those levied by the privately-owned networks in SA and Victoria. Presently they can be twice as much.

We’re told those networks are more efficient and employ less workers, delivering lower costs to consumers. Falling demand for electricity means there’s also less need to build expensive ‘gold plated’ networks.

It was the massive investment and poorly controlled spending in the high-tech and high-cost ‘poles and wires’, including pylons and transformers, which saw many bills blow out by more than 70% in the past five years.

Network costs can add up to almost 60% of some people’s energy bills especially if they live in the higher cost of service rural areas.

But the NSW government and their poles and wires companies have lodged appeals to the Australian Competition Tribunal, claiming the cuts to their revenue mean they can’t operate safely or reliably.

They are backed by the trade unions as 2,200 jobs are at stake. The network companies say they have already shaved more than $3 billion and 3000 jobs from their capital and operating programs.

They also claim the cuts mean they can’t manage vegetation growth in rural areas, which, as the 2009 Victorian bushfires demonstrated, can carry serious risks.

Their arguments may sound convincing but have drawn fire from numerous quarters.

The ALP says the AER’s decision is fair and the NSW Government only wants to increase the waning value of the networks – a large part of which are up for a $13 billion long-term lease.

Groups representing consumers, welfare and business have also attacked the appeal and the Public Interest Advocacy Centre has brought its own legal challenge arguing for even bigger spending cuts on the networks.

To have your say, help us put together a submission to the Competition Tribunal.  Spend a few minutes answering the snap poll above on how power prices have affected your life, and leave a comment in our forum below.

We will report back soon on the next steps and make sure the voice of FiftyUps is heard.

Cheap power is sign of a prosperous nation where all its citizens and businesses can thrive and are regarded as the main game. The relative to average income of affordable cheap power is 101 common sense for any nation seeking to further the interests of its peoples and businesses alike. Its decent honourable and necessary for a nation to have readily affordable power to the betterment of us all. Not just those who see the opportunity to gouge out absurd profits from a hostage market base from what is an absolutely essential service or those who think like a senior high school student or early years at university trying to impose their panic stricken ill-conceived child like brain washed thought processes upon a nation. All along aiding and abetting those who seek to create a New currency by way of carbon credits for the super rich who are dumbfounded and confounded as to how to make an honest buck when the technological age is making more people savvy as to market manipulation and what amounts to questionable dealings as we all witnessed with the GFC which we are all still living with the consequences thereof. Just take look who sits on the UN climate change board - the old money uber rich. They are convinced that they are born to rule and the lunatic immature lefties are giving it to them on a picnic platter - so there - I've said my bit - You, you yous

I cant believe the power companies are launching a legal challenge on the price cut, these guys have been gouging consumers for years. The CEOs get paid millions and the users struggle to pay their bills and keep warm in winter. Power companies deride solar power or any green energy because they lessen their take home money and the Government continues to allow coal companies to do whatever r they want as long as royalties keep flowing. I recently did a survey, Not Fifty-Ups about this and they asked a few different questions about what I'd be a happy with if I go price cut and one of those was power cuts during certain times of day if we want prices lowered. There is even talk of making everyone install smart meters which err on the side of power companies NOT consumers. All I can say is voters can do something next year when the Federal Election is on vote for anyone else but LNP or Labor because no matter which one of those gets in the situation wont change.

I don't have an issue with my electricity bills, I have a small solar system on the roof which covers about 30% of my annual electricity use, but with a 50 cent gross feed in tariff, I pay around $100 per annum. My beef is gas! Living in Canberra, my builder wouldn't listen when it came to installing heatin in my house, it had to be gas when I preferred RC air-conditioning. I don't like gas for cooking, so I would have preferred to have no gas to my house altogether. My gas bill, which is for heating and hot water (showers only), comes to $2,000 per annum! If I had RC aircon, it would be an easy matter to have another 5kW solar panels fitted on my roof that should just about negate my entire energy bill!

Builders for you! Most are so stupid as they mistake your confidence for arrogance the idiots (and "proud of it")... And once the place is built, try to have them come back to fix a problem! God luck to you...

Reading all this (some very sad comments) I am now more than ever tempted to vote for The Greens, thank you Anonymous, yes, could not be worse than it is now with The Greens, could it?

ORIGIN - WHAT A MESS. Last September all we did was change the name on the power account because our mother passed away. Previously the account was paid on easy way by direct debit. Thereafter the electricity bill reached $700. We were notified we would be disconnected. The money had been credited somewhere else. Origin had THREE account numbers for the same property. We had NEVER received a notice to say we were in default. Same occupants for 15 years at least. haha. Numerous phone calls, hours on the phone. Contacted the Ombudsman who has not bothered to reply. Meanwhile we have an electricity bill of $700 for no difference in usage. None at all. Now I am paying $99 per fortnight instead of around $60. This all happened BECAUSE WE CHANGED THE ACCOUNT HOLDER'S NAME ONLY. They do not care and they are abysmally incompetent as is the Ombudsman's office. I am a working disabled person and it would be cheaper to be dead at the moment.

It's ok Brenda, I know it's not supposed to be a blog but one line comments aren't enough. We do need to vent our spleens over this or we will be slapped down. Your experience is pretty horrific & if I move from where I live I will keep a sharp eye on Ergon should they play the same game. Cheers.

Thank you Ronald. I have also been informed that the company that reads the meter is overseas owned. Is this correct ? Imagine how much they make on large blocks of units.

Nothing is impossible when the entire farm is offered for sale, stock, locks and barrel! A "Liberals" signature, nothing new or surprising, but crazy and stupid (not for all, some will make a buck out of those sales, trust me...) , yes!... Chris

RE ORIGIN. Previously paying about $60 per fortnight on easy way for years. Fine, direct debit, great.. We then changed the account holder's name as she was deceased. Bank details the same. Next thing, no notice of any default on fortnightly payments at all. Then received a $700 electricity bill. Numerous phone calls and hours on hold. Discovered there were three different account numbers for the same address.. Why? dont know. Their end, not mine. Now paying $99 per fortnight for electricity which I cannot afford. Where did the money go? Can't find that out either. Ombudsman has not bothered to reply Have given up and am just paying!!!!! HELP!!!

Electricity is becoming to expensive. We don't turn on the heating when we are cold, we turn off all appliances at the power point and have the lights off whenever possible

Howard from QLD replied to Femia:

Femia, that's 3rd world conditions. What the hell is happening with this country? The problem with our politicians is they are too wrapped up in playing politics. It's just a job & a salary for them. They go through the motions but seem to have missed the point that they are to run our country & do a bloody good job of it. Where have our statesmen gone, where is the politician who will stand up & show he's got guts to DO something for this country, not just the damn party or appease other pollies? Everything has gone softly, softly & wishywashy in case we upset someone. We've become thin skinned, soft & all run to be counselled at the drop of a hat. I am of the generation that was told to toughen up, get over it & get on with the next task. What the hell happened? But that is a whole new topic.
