Power Cuts or Power Bill Cuts – Does it really come down to a choice?

Who do you believe – the energy regulator charged with putting the long-term interests of consumers first? Or the NSW ‘poles and wires’ companies which actually deliver the stuff?

That’s essentially the argument behind a high stakes legal stoush which will determine the size of planned 5-12% reductions to your next electricity bills.

And it’s especially important for older Australians who generally face higher bills. They are at home more, spend a higher proportion of their income on electricity; and are hit harder by climbing supply charges.

But those big savings promised to consumers are now under threat as the poles and wires companies and the NSW state government which owns them launch legal appeals against planned price cuts due on July 1.

So the FiftyUp Club is going to launch an appeal of its own: from today we’re asking you, the members, to send us your views on the legal battle, and tell us how higher electricity costs have impacted on your wallet and way of life.

THE FULL STORY

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has fixed a five-year pricing determination which cut the amounts the NSW state-owned poles and wires businesses could charge us by some $6 billion to 2019.

It adds up to big savings for the consumer of between $100 and $300 a year depending where you live. It is aimed to bring the costs of delivery to NSW households in line with those levied by the privately-owned networks in SA and Victoria. Presently they can be twice as much.

We’re told those networks are more efficient and employ less workers, delivering lower costs to consumers. Falling demand for electricity means there’s also less need to build expensive ‘gold plated’ networks.

It was the massive investment and poorly controlled spending in the high-tech and high-cost ‘poles and wires’, including pylons and transformers, which saw many bills blow out by more than 70% in the past five years.

Network costs can add up to almost 60% of some people’s energy bills especially if they live in the higher cost of service rural areas.

But the NSW government and their poles and wires companies have lodged appeals to the Australian Competition Tribunal, claiming the cuts to their revenue mean they can’t operate safely or reliably.

They are backed by the trade unions as 2,200 jobs are at stake. The network companies say they have already shaved more than $3 billion and 3000 jobs from their capital and operating programs.

They also claim the cuts mean they can’t manage vegetation growth in rural areas, which, as the 2009 Victorian bushfires demonstrated, can carry serious risks.

Their arguments may sound convincing but have drawn fire from numerous quarters.

The ALP says the AER’s decision is fair and the NSW Government only wants to increase the waning value of the networks – a large part of which are up for a $13 billion long-term lease.

Groups representing consumers, welfare and business have also attacked the appeal and the Public Interest Advocacy Centre has brought its own legal challenge arguing for even bigger spending cuts on the networks.

To have your say, help us put together a submission to the Competition Tribunal.  Spend a few minutes answering the snap poll above on how power prices have affected your life, and leave a comment in our forum below.

We will report back soon on the next steps and make sure the voice of FiftyUps is heard.

Thanks Alain I read somewhere --call no man an idiot it could come back to bite. Have you had a tree flatten your house and lose everything including a loved one. All because the greens would not allow the council to remove it.?

[Also posted in another thread but sooo important for the overall picture] Statistics revealed by SmartCompany earlier this week that showed the Australian Tax Office applied to wind-up 556 companies in May. “This figure represents 77% of all wind-ups in Australia and is twice as many as July 2014, making the government the largest petitioner of bankruptcy in Australia,” Clive Palmer said in a statement to SmartCompany this afternoon.

I don't trust anyone or believe any information that is supplied by anybody relative the power supply industry. I installed solar power at considerable cost designed to accommodate my historic power usage together with a healthy margin to deal with reasonable increased charges - what happened then - prices increased progressively by some 70% and my power usage (Kw/day) increased by some 53% even though we didn't change our habits and in fact improved efficiencies. The explanation from the supplier was that the old meters were inaccurate and the new ones were a true indication of usage. What a load of crap. Paul

Someone
Someone from NSW replied to Paul:

A story I've heard many times... A sad story, really. My electrician told me to never replace the two meters in their box by new ones, I would lose in that exchange, reading you, Paul corroborate his words... ONLY A POLITICAL PARTY WITH A WILL TO PRIVILEGE RENEWABLE ENERGIES WILL SAVE US FROM THOSE DISHONEST PRICES FOR OUR POWER, YOU BELIEVE IT, OR NOT...

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Paul:

Paul, have you raised this with your local MP, or the Energy Minister, or the Ombudsman. Rebates for solar was canned by Federal Labor after the extremely over generous rebate scheme blew out from $1 Billion to $6 Billion. Seems you may have installed solar post this period. I've not installed Solar, but installed LED lighting and an instant heat gas hot water system, and water saving systems. Saved heaps. Gas bill cut in half.

"generous rebate scheme blew out from $1 Billion to $6 Billion" : we should be paid for every Kw we feed the grid the same price they charge us for theirs...

Look at the economy! At the share market since last week ! Look at the Trade Figures today ! YOUR LIBS GOVERNMENT IS AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER !!! What will it take for you to understand the ENORMOUS MISTAKE you made in electing such a bunch of clowns with NO VISION WHAT SO EVER FOR THE COUNTRY!

Someone
Someone from NSW commented:

Not convinced by me? SO listen to JP Morgan economist Tom Kennedy who described today the trade data as a "disaster", with it being the biggest deficit in figures going back to 1971.

Warren
Warren from NSW commented:

Find a mirror and you'll see the clown. Your comment does not make sense. It's one thing to quote other economist's input, but clearly you're selective in your quotes and you don't even understand what they've said. Why use CAPITALS - your 'shouting' at people, and we don't like it.

Someone

Soon, Vida you are going to pay an exorbitant price for "everything" the way this country is run... please, take my word... in the meantime, accept some massive losses on the sharemarket and a loss if you ever put your money in a term deposit account...

I believe unions have had their day. There is so much corruption in the unions today, and some workers are rorting the benefits they are being paying for. The top end so called trusted union representatives are taking advantage of business while we wonder why there are price increases. If business's don't make profit, they will not employ people. It's a vicious circle and unions need to cut back some benefits, so others can keep jobs and more people are employed. I was a former union delegate!
